The hard hat is an iconic symbol of construction, but over the past few years, there has been a push to transition the industry to the safety helmet. Advocates say the climbing-style head covering is safer and more comfortable for workers.


But the transition hasn’t always gone smoothly. It’s taken adoption by progressive, safety-oriented companies and major buy-in from workers—and even still, there are major obstacles to widespread acceptance.

What Contractors Need to Know 

about E-Verify Requirements


In May, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a requirement that private companies with more than 25 employees use the federal E-Verify data system to ensure their workers are legally permitted to work in the United States.

 

That has led to a huge upswell of concern and confusion for construction leaders, who fear an already thin workforce will be weeded out further. Reports of abandoned job sites in Florida in the weeks following the law’s passage only exacerbated those concerns.

2023 FMI Talent Study


Talent shortages have plagued engineering and construction (E&C) firms for decades, but the situation has been exacerbated in recent years by a wave of exits as the last of the baby boomers hit retirement age, and by the Great Resignation, a broad term for the exodus of talent through the pandemic and competition from other industries.


In October 2022, Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed that the quits rate for construction remained steady at 2.4% after peaking at 3.3% in March 2022. The transportation, warehousing and utilities sectors had a 3.1% quits rate. For comparison, information services had a quits rate of just 0.9%.

AWCI Releases “Safe Work Practices for Wall & Ceiling Industry Construction Workers”


AWCI has released “Safe Work Practices for Wall & Ceiling Industry Construction Workers, an AWCI Safety Resource,” a publication on best practices for construction site safety.


Targeted to construction professionals in the wall and ceiling industry, the 28-page document provides summaries of safety best practices and principles on 41 potential hazards in the drywall and plastering fields. The subject matter ranges from aerial lifts to welding and includes several topics specific to drywall construction, such as drywall carts and stilts.


The information provided is a quick read and easy to understand and is useful for toolbox-talk presentations as well as a year-round resource.
