7 Construction Contract Mistakes
to Avoid in 2022

Don’t agree to liquidated damages without a waiver of consequential damages. If you are behind on a project, try to negotiate a grace period with the owner. Be wary of long correction of work periods. Don’t agree on pricing too soon in the design process. Consider a price escalation clause. Buy materials early. Don’t forget to factor increased labor rates into your proposals.

Women Panelists Describe Their Vision
for Equitable Jobsites

Though women are a growing presence on the jobsite, it’s no secret that construction remains male-dominated. If that’s going to change, there must be a collaborative effort to make the industry attractive to all, said panelists at the National Association of Women in Construction Puget Sound's diversity, equity and inclusion event on Tuesday.

Women account for only 11% of workers in construction overall, according to a recent Fixr report, although their numbers have risen 50% in the past decade. In the field, however, the gender disparity is even more stark: Only 3% to 4% of jobs in production, transportation, construction and maintenance are occupied by women. Women are underrepresented in leadership as well, according to Fixr, making up 17% of management and professional workers.

Subcontracts Are Broken

A subcontract is supposed to be a clear set of instructions that explain the relationship between the prime contractor and the subcontractor throughout the construction project, as well as the details of the service or project that is agreed on. The way subcontracts are written currently, though, fail miserably at accomplishing this. They might as well be instructions written in a foreign language because they are impossible to understand. The status quo is outdated, and it shouldn't be this way. Change starts with speaking out and starting a necessary conversation.

Productivity is Down. Now What?
Know the Detractors & Distractors that Tank
the Delivery of Quality Work

The construction industry is largely based on a simple system: estimates. In fact, it is so simple it might even be slightly unnerving. Imagine if you asked your heart surgeon for a quote and the doctor said, “I think we could knock out that blockage in about seven hours.” The more discomforting feeling would come if the doctor underbid the project just to keep the nursing staff busy and then didn’t finish the job on time because they ran out of materials.
