BIPOC Affinity Group Sign-Up
The LPS Equity Teams have been contacted by school community members with interests in creating affinity groups. Affinity groups are defined as “a group of people sharing a common interest or goal, or acting together for a specific purpose.” At this time, members of our school community and equity teams have made specific requests for an LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, ally/asexual +) group, an AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander)group, and a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) group. These groups, which will meet approximately three times per year, will serve as an advisory group to the District Equity Team by offering their experiences, their voices, their interest in collaborating with us and their resources.

The district's LGBTQIA+ group and AAPI group recently held their first meetings. The BIPOC group will hold its first meeting soon! Those who are interested in joining should sign-up here:

If you have a suggestion or a desire to partner with the district equity team in creating any additional affinity groups, please contact Lisa Steiger at lsteiger@livingston.org or your building principal.

First Graders "Adopt a Vet"
This month, across the district, first grade students participated in an "Adopt a Vet" program in honor of Veterans Day. The goal of the program, which was spearheaded by K-6 Social Studies Supervisor Mr. Chris Bickel, is to create relationships between students and the veterans who live in our town.

Recently, the veterans visited their schools for the first time. The students were very excited to welcome their "adoptees!" They made special signs, prepared questions, and hand wrote letters of thanks! The first grade classes plan to maintain this special relationship throughout the school year through additional visits, letters and other activities.
LHS Students Named to NJ All-State Orchestra
The Livingston High School Orchestra's tenth grade violinist, Edward Zheng, and twelfth grade bassist, Geetika Komati, were accepted into the prestigious 2021 New Jersey All-State Orchestra. Both auditioned this past summer. Edward was accepted out of over 200 violin auditionees, and Geetika was accepted out of more than 30 bass auditionees. Although the students did not get to perform in Atlantic City or at NJPAC this year, they participated in several unique remote rehearsals, followed by video submissions for a large concert video performance to be shared at a later date. Congratulations!
A Revolutionary Museum!
Students in Mrs. Hreha's social studies class at Heritage Middle School have been studying the Colonial Period and the Revolutionary War. As part of their lessons, they created pieces for a Colonial/Revolutionary War Museum project. The museum, which was set up in the HMS Media Center with the help of media specialist Ms. Tannler, included information about and replicas of various aspects of the time period.
