The Arts Matter
State of the Arts
As schools celebrate the artist in every student, the focus on arts education during March’s Youth Art Month is a reminder to our students to “recognize and appreciate true beauty, to be sensitive to life, to our planet and the people within it, to be compassionate, and most of all – to be human,” says Mara Rubin, the district’s Supervisor for Visual and Performing Arts.

That appreciation, sensitivity and compassion are deeply nurtured by our arts and music educators, and was on full view on Monday, March 6 at the opening of the Student Perspectives Art Exhibit in Town Hall. This exhibition features nearly 75 works by the high school’s Advanced Placement art students across a range of genres and mediums, including digital photography, studio art, ceramics, and digital imaging. It is on display through April.
Scholastic Art & Writing
Jeffrey Liao won four Gold Key awards in writing in the regional Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition, and Grace Lin earned three Gold Keys for paintings, including for "Chaos" (shown). Priansh Shah won two Gold Key awards in writing.

LHS students won a total of 21 Gold Key awards in the contest, with art of some of the students currently on view at the Montclair Art Museum.

A list of all the winners is posted on the LPS website.
GT Art Winner
Rachel Hu, a student at Heritage, won first place in the middle school art category from the New Jersey Association For Gifted Children.
Successful Auditions
Student musicians successfully auditioned for honors ensembles in orchestra, band and chorus. Twenty students from Heritage and LHS were named to regional groups. LHS junior Ellen Park was named to the New Jersey All-State Band.

Guest Performer
Riker Hill Elementary School enjoyed a visit from a special guest performer: Duoming Ba, a violinist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Ms. Ba, whose son Leon is a member of the school orchestra, played Bach, Mozart and more for the students. She also shared her experiences in early musical studies and her life in music. She began playing the violin at age five and made her solo debut at age 15 in the Beijing Concert Hall. She performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic Ensembles and has been a participant in numerous music festivals. She is shown with teachers John Palatucci and Etleva Vatoci.
Reading Matters
Read Across America
Across Livingston, elementary schools joined schools across America to promote reading. There were students in red-and-white stovepipe hats and the Dr. Seuss mop-headed duo, Thing One and Thing Two. But that is not all! Oh, no. That is not all ...

It was all part of the annual Read Across America and the tribute to Theodor Seuss Geisel. Teachers and media specialists helped make the special reading events come alive in the schools, dressing as the Cat in the Hat and book characters, inviting guest readers, and graphing their favorite books.
Parents Matter
Volunteers Needed for LMAC
Smoking, drinking and drug use among teens is a real concern in communities across America. In the work of the Town Council and BOE, community leaders know too well that Livingston is not immune.

Helping our children stay away from drugs takes a village. Livingston has such an intervention partnership, with the school/community Livingston Municipal Alliance Committee (LMAC) providing local solutions to the local concerns of substance abuse.

Right now, LMAC is actively looking for new volunteers to champion the cause.

This is an opportunity for parents and civic volunteers to help strengthen the important work of developing prevention strategies as we work together to deal with the very serious issues facing our youth.

What's a #LPSshelfie?

What's with the hashtag #LPSshelfie? It's all part of a Heritage Middle School project led by the Builders' Club to promote the Disney charity #Magicofstorytelling. For every "shelfie" taken and hashtaged on Instagram or Twitter, Disney will donate a book to First Book for children in need.

The students are encouraging other students and schools to join the effort. The charity drive goes until March 31.

Diversity Matters
The LHS Student Government Association is hosting a community-wide Multicultural Night on Friday, March 31 to promote diversity, unity, and inclusiveness in response to a very divisive year. The evening is designed to showcase the diversity of the Livingston community through activities and food samplings provided by local restaurants, community organizations, and LHS clubs.  This free event will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the high school’s Fitness and Wellness Center.
