BOC VS. EDDIE DANIEL
Last Wednesday at the Douglas County Courthouse, a remarkable demonstration of community support unfolded. Citizens from all walks of life—deputies, firemen, and everyday residents of Douglas County—gathered in Citizens’ Hall to stand behind an exceptional individual, Eddie Daniel, many of whom in attendance had known Eddie for years and witnessed his dedication to the county in various capacities. I would estimate around 125 to 150 attended this hearing.
Eddie’s commitment to Douglas County extends beyond his role as a fireman for decades but includes his role as a builder of several Douglas County’s fire stations, his service on several committees for the County, his service as a deacon of his church, and his service as a community and charitable leader. His reputation is built on years of tireless work and unwavering integrity.
For over eleven years, Eddie served as the employee representative on the Personnel Review Committee (PRC), a vital body responsible for hearing appeals from county employees who believed they had been unjustly treated or disciplined. The PRC consists of three members: one chosen by the employees, one by elected officials, and the third selected by the other two. Eddie presently was chosen by his peers to serve as Chairman, ensuring that all actions taken by the committee were agreed upon collectively by the members. They can override a disciplinary action by the county. However, the County was seeking to remove him from the PRB, thus tarnishing his reputation. He was mainly charged with “YELLING over the phone at a county employee” wherein she felt “threatened.” I've known Eddie for over 40 years and have never seen or heard of him acting disrespectfully toward anyone, as many others have also confirmed. He admitted he did use a “stern” voice. My guess is she was probably upset because her feelings got hurt. Did I mention the County was represented by two attorneys, the County Attorney and another from Atlanta, while Eddie was defending himself. He received notice of the hearing at 11 PM the night before.
However, All’s well that End’s Well, as the saying goes. The BOC’s vote was 3-2 to drop the charges against Eddie. This hearing lasted about 6 hours.
As observed in Isaiah 3:5 NASB1995, “And the people will be oppressed, Each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; The youth will storm against the elder, And the inferior against the honorable.” The gathering at the courthouse stands in contrast to this warning, highlighting the value of honoring those who serve with distinction and integrity.
