DOUGLAS COUNTY MUSEUM
Recently, a rather dramatic turn of events unfolded when three members of the Board of Commissioners voted against renewing the lease for our beloved Musuem housed in the old courthouse. This decision leaves the Museum with a daunting choice: relocate or face closure.
It brings to mind a previous episode involving the statue of the soldier outside the NEW COURTHOUSE, which sparked quite the debate when the Democratic Party pushed for its removal. I observed the statue carefully and felt that its ambiguous representation of the Civil War could actually serve as a bridge for unity. I proposed to the Commissioners that we honor all 600,000 soldiers who lost their lives on both sides with a plaque and leave it where it sat.
Alas, my vision for reconciliation fell on deaf ears, and instead, thousands were spent to relocate the statue to the Museum. Now, with the lease uncertainty, one can't help but wonder about the future of this hefty statue. Will it find a new home, or will it become the Museum's very own paperweight? Regardless, it's a reminder that even in times of change, we must keep our spirits high and our humor intact as we navigate these challenges together!
