A few years back the majority of the BOC hired legislative aides for themselves starting first as part-time at $40k per year and converting them to full time the next year at twice that salary PLUS BENEFITS. At that time, I sat on the Board and stated I was not opposed to them hiring aides but warned them the pay was way out of line and would cause a huge morale problem among veteran employees, including firemen and deputies, who made thousands less than these young and inexperienced aides. However, no consideration or thought was given to my warnings and the aides were hired and paid as proposed by the other commissioners, including Tarenia Carthan and Kelly Robinson, both of whom have since resigned their positions on the Board.
Needless to say, almost every department in the county had a serious morale problem afterwards and often lost good employees as a result.
At the March 5 BOC meeting, a new policy was passed by the current Board returning the positions to part-time and reducing the pay to a more appropriate salary. Thank goodness for common sense!
