Family Spirit Featured in
 RED Talks Video!
RED Talks aims to "Shape Tribal Futures" by creating and sharing videos highlighting tribal research, partnerships, success stories, and Native wisdom to facilitate connections from tribe to tribe about "what works." RED Talks began in 2016, when Missouri Breaks Research on the Cheyenne River Reservation, recognized the need to improve dissemination of ideas that shape tribal futures.

The Family Spirit Program and Health Educator Takayla Lightfield are featured in the newest RED Talks video! Family Spirit is a peer educator program providing support for American Indian mothers and parents of children ages 3 and under. Families will learn information about how to have the healthiest pregnancy for them and their baby, how to be prepared for the birth of the baby, and get prepared for how the baby will impact their future. Along the way, families will learn about the different developmental stages their baby will go through and ways to keep them safe, healthy, and happy. Families will also learn how to parent their child in a confident way that works best for them and ensures the best start to their child’s life. While this program has a large focus on the baby, it also helps families adjust to the new life of being parents.

Family Spirit is seeking more referrals!
If you or someone you know are interested in the Family Spirit Program and would like more information, please contact Health Educator Takayla Lightfield at [email protected] or 612-276-1570

Parade Float!
DIW staff and some clients participated in the American Indian Month Kickoff Day Parade on May 1st! DIW staff created a float that consisted of a cardboard canoe atop garland "water" and plastic fish. Written on the sides of the canoe were "DIW" and "Dope Indian Women...and Some Guys". What a great way to kick off American Indian Month!

Youth Leadership Development Program
Freedom School started on June 17th! This 6 week program is at Seward Montessori and is for students grades 1-12. Freedom School is a literacy based program using culturally relevant literature for the first half of the day and the cultural activities and lessons in the afternoon. The youth take field trips every Friday and we participate in National Youth Action Day.

Our family night was May 29th in the Dakota lodge. We had a BBQ, a selfie station, pinata, and outdoor games. We also had the Textiles Center come and lead a weaving project. Ida Downwind was there and started us off in prayer.

YLDP received a grant called HYPE which stands for Helping Youth Provide Empowerment. They were tasked with creating a flyer and a media project on the prevention of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. They decided to focus on alcohol and as a group to make an activity booklet that has statistics on effects of alcohol, a word search and crossword puzzle using terms of addiction, abuse and prevention and also a coloring page. Our youth created all the art work and the information it contains. For the media project they wrote a short skit and were able to get it recorded through collaboration with Migizi. They have yet to see the video, but are really looking forward to the final result. Our youth worked really hard on this project and we can't wait to share it with the community!

Be sure to follow Division of Indian Work on Facebook as we will post the video that the youth created as soon as it's available! We will also try to post it in the next newsletter.
Ninde Doulas
Ninde was created several years ago when community members were seeing the rise in the opioid epidemic and how it was affecting the women in our community. The epidemic was not yet apparent to those in higher leadership roles. The Ninde Coalition started as a small group of women who wanted to see a change.
In the past years we were able to train and work closely with 5 doulas. This year with our grant expansion we are able to sustain a total of 20 doulas. 14 women went through the intense 4-day training here at Division of Indian Work this April. That was the very beginning of their journeys as Indigenous doulas.
In 2019 we have made it our goal to serve 40 expecting mothers, giving them the love and support they need in this time of growth and transition.
