As we begin a new calendar year and winter settles in, I’ve been thinking lately about snow. Have you ever noticed that snowflakes resemble the hexagonal Star of David, a prominent symbol in Judaism? According to the NOAA, a snowflake forms when a water droplet freezes in the sky to create an ice crystal. As the crystal falls to the ground, more water vapors freeze onto the primary crystal to form the six arms of the snowflake. Although the six sides of the shape are maintained as the crystals fall to the ground, they each experience a unique set of atmospheric conditions, which means no two snowflakes are ever exactly alike.

The Midrash Tanhuma addresses a similar principle when it comes to embracing differences within a community: “If you see a great gathering of people, recite the blessing “Blessed is the Wise One who knows all secrets” (Baruch hacham ha-razim). For just as their faces are different from one another’s, so are their minds unlike one another’s. In fact, each person has a distinctive and individual mind.”

Our guiding principles at the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation are also core Jewish values, such as Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), Hatikvah (hope), and Tzedakah (righteousness and charity). Upon reflection, I would add Chokmah (wisdom). Our role as philanthropic advisors means ensuring donors feel confident that they’re making the wisest decision when it comes to allocating their charitable resources. We recognize that each donor is unique, with individual passions and life experiences. We’ll meet you at any stage in your philanthropic journey and are available to advise on potential beneficiary organizations most in line with your personal priorities.
