Dear Friend of DKT,

More women have access to contraception today than at any point in human history. As we look forward to 2023, DKT is focused on proven strategies that produce results and we continue to invest in ensuring that high quality products are made widely available; and that people are educated and empowered about their choices.

We are still crunching our 2022 results (and will make those available more widely next month), but I am pleased to tell you that we had another record breaking year in terms of scale and health impact.

The year ahead promises to be an exciting one. We aim to share more of our qualitative and quantitative learnings about safe abortion, social marketing, and DKT’s innovative financing. This month’s newsletter explores some of those learnings, with results from a research project analyzing the private sector’s contribution to the contraceptive market in the Francophone West and Central Africa region. But we would also welcome ideas and questions from you. What more would you like to know from DKT International? Please let us know! We are always open to feedback and ideas.

DKT has set two big goals for 2030. These are to 1) double our health impact to 100 million CYPs and to 2) achieve increased sustainability such that 90 percent of DKT operations worldwide are covered with sales revenues. To do this, we continue to need and ask for support from donors - both institutional and individual to help further catalyze these developments.

Again, thank you for your continued support and interest. We wish everyone a prosperous and healthy 2023.

Cheers

Christopher Purdy

DKT finishes 2022 expanding contraceptive choice in Sudan and other markets

Just a few months after resuming condom sales in Sudan, DKT continues to make progress launching new products. The first sale of Lana IUDs began last month, preceded by training sessions with 40 doctors on manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) kits and IUD insertion methods. DKT also organized community awareness sessions on the Lana IUD at a local hospital, where women learned about sexual and reproductive health and were introduced to different contraceptive methods. During the meeting, DKT distributed gifts and flyers about Lana IUDs in Arabic.

Further progress was made in the region with the first orders of MVA, cannulae, Lana IUDs, and hormonal IUDs arriving in Iraq. In Kenya, the hormonal Eloira IUD was also launched in November, helping expand options for contraceptive methods.

DKT drives down prices by crowding the market in Francophone West and Central Africa

Across eight countries in Francophone West and Central Africa (FWACA), DKT conducted research analyzing the private sector’s emergency contraceptive market. Researchers found the average wholesale price for emergency contraceptives dropped approximately $0.17 between 2018 to 2022, non-adjusted for inflation. Furthermore, the number of stock-keeping units (SKUs)—a metric used to track inventory—increased by 13% during the period, as did the volume of emergency contraceptives, which increased by 68%. This indicates that the market is still growing and that DKT’s entry has coincided with a ‘crowding in’ of the market, accompanied by an increase in affordability/decline in pricing.

Note: the data used to conduct this analysis was voluntarily reported to the pharmaceutical company IQVIA, and therefore is likely not a holistic representation of the regional emergency contraceptive market. However, the dataset provides for the best approximation of private sector sales in the region.

DKT participates in National Press Club event on abortion access

Why do negative attitudes towards sexual and reproductive rights persist in the United States when the global trend is towards expansion, and not constriction of those rights? This was the question posed by Ipas President and CEO, Anu Kumar, at an Ipas-sponsored event at the National Press Club in Washington, DC this week. Dr. Kumar and DKT International President Chris Purdy answered questions from reporters and spoke on a panel alongside Dr. Christine Ryan, Legal Director of the Global Justice Center, and Jamie Manson, President of Catholics For Choice. The event was moderated by Bethany Van Kampen Saravia, Senior Policy and Legal Advisor at Ipas.

Panelists addressed the policy challenges faced by international and national sexual and reproductive health organizations given the shifts to the United States' reproductive health landscape in the past year. They called on the Biden Administration to continue expanding access and repeal the Helms Amendment, which prohibits the use of federal funding for all abortions, even in circumstances of rape, incest or risk to the life of a pregnant person.

In this video, DKT President Chris Purdy talks about positive trends in abortion care, specific to the global use of medical abortion pills (which now account for more than 50 percent of abortions in the United States), and how access to this vital medication varies worldwide.

Cows, cattle, and… contraceptives? Janani provides SRH counseling at cattle fair

Count on DKT to deliver strong results in unexpected places. Last month, DKT provided outreach at the Sonpur Mela, the biggest cattle fair in Asia. This month-long fair takes place in Bihar, India and welcomes over 6 million people each year. Janani seized the opportunity to set up a sexual and reproductive health counseling clinic to promote products and services among the fair's hustle and bustle. In the end, our team educated and counseled over 50,000 clients on sexual and reproductive health.

In Brazil, the social media pages for Prudence donned the flag’s blue, green, and yellow hues, and more than 70 radio blitz events were held during the games. Meanwhile, DKT Pakistan shared on Facebook that their country produces 70 percent of soccer balls, reminding everyone that the World Cup relies on their ‘strong balls.’

Goooooooooooal! Best of DKT World Cup ads

With over 3 billion viewers, the World Cup is easily the most-watched sporting event internationally, providing an excellent marketing opportunity for our global teams who naturally, took advantage of it. This year, the World Cup games inspired social media campaigns that promoted both national pride and DKT’s brands.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

This year, Women First Digital’s platform safe2choose participated in the annual international UN Women-sponsored campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”. One in three women globally experience gender-based violence. The campaign raised awareness for the overlooked issue and centered around the theme of “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls,” which invited the world to stand in solidarity with women’s rights activists. Over the 16 days of the campaign, safe2choose posted 16 separate videos on their Instagram where women discussed topics such as consent, abortion access, and ways to reduce gender-based violence.

DKT is an innovative and adventurous social marketing organization that improves people's lives.
