News & Updates from DKT

May 2022
Dear Friend of DKT,
My recent travels to Liberia shed light on the many ways our hard-working teams are impacting the lives of women and men throughout the country. In one day, we saw young women receiving IUDs and implants, pharmacies stocking Fiesta condoms and Lydia emergency contraceptives, and healthcare providers receiving training on post-abortion care. Although the latest news on abortion access in the US leaves us feeling discouraged, I am grateful that we can turn to DKT’s on-the-ground efforts that increase sexual and reproductive health access.

This month, our newsletter reflects on a number of important aspects of DKT’s mission, including building the capacity of healthcare providers, engaging digital resources to provide SRH self-care, and increasing access to essential contraceptives in restrictive environments. I hope you will take these updates as a reminder of the key role DKT plays in transforming the world of sexual and reproductive health every day.

Thank you for your continued support.

Expanding access to family planning in Jordan and the Middle East
In early 2022, DKT Middle East & Northern Africa (MENA) successfully sold their first order of Lana IUDs to gynecologists in Jordan. Delivering over 900 IUDs, DKT is proud to provide women with more contraceptive options in the region. DKT’s relationship with over 70 of the most renowned gynecologists in Jordan helped to support the successful launch. DKT also now sells and markets Fiesta condoms and lubricating gel in Jordan pharmacies. Plans are afoot to bring a range of contraceptives to other countries in the region, including Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon.

Women First Digital bridges the gap between online and on-the-ground abortion care
DKT International is proud to partner with Women First Digital. Their presence in the online sexual and reproductive health community offers millions of people convenient access to education and resources directly through their devices. While these digital tools reach communities in all corners of the world, Women First Digital aims to increase on-the-ground activities to feature their resources in more populous areas. As the “Green Wave” movement in Latin America gains momentum, informing abortion-seekers about the availability of abortion care throughout the region is crucial. Women First Digital recently installed two new HowToUseAbortionPill.org billboards in Hidalgo, Mexico, where abortion was recently decriminalized, to promote their Ally abortion chatbox. Since its launch in 2020, the Ally chatbox has hosted over 10,000 conversations in Spanish, reducing language barriers and increasing access to safe abortions in Latin America.
Ally chatbot billboards across Latin America are strategically placed near hospitals to increase general service awareness.
DKT Philippines places access to emergency contraception back into the hands of women
A teenage pregnancy crisis continues to persist in the Philippines. According to a national survey, only 1 in 4 sexually active, unmarried women age 18-29 is aware of emergency contraception (EC) or that it can be used to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. Although EC is currently banned in the Philippines, DKT is committed to helping reduce teenage pregnancies by promoting an alternative EC option known as the Yuzpe method. The Yuzpe method is a larger dose of combined oral contraceptive pills with an 88% efficacy rate if taken within 72 hours. DKT Philippines commissioned a survey about EC and the Yuzpe method to assess awareness and public perception of the method. Among women seeking an EC method and healthcare providers who serve them, the survey results revealed this option has become increasingly popular. DKT will use survey results to help advance possible EC in the Philippines.

Learn more about the Yuzpe method here.
