With the onset of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rate of dog adoptions has increased significantly.

Many of these “pandemic puppy parents” are couples seeking a companion and a form of entertainment during these unprecedented times.

But what happens to your beloved fur-child if you and your spouse separate?
Ever so often in the staid and respectable land of legal precedent and common law, a case is handed down that turns settled law on its head.

Frequently it’s a charter challenge, but sometimes it’s just taking the law as we know it and extending it to everyday situations. Calmusky v. Calmusky, 2020 ONSC 1506 is such a decision.

IV. What We're Following
Kyla Dupuis recommends the Audio Book “The Skin We're In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power” by Desmond Cole : this work shares stories of lived realities, struggles and triumphs, for those with intersectional identities including BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ in Canada in 2017.

Emily Koch really liked The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen, which is a collection of short stories exploring the experience of Vietnamese refugees who fled Vietnam during the war, and their relationship with America. The author came to America as a refugee himself and he offers valuable insight based on his own knowledge and that of his fellow Vietnamese Americans.
Patricia Daunais is currently reading Barak Obama's "A Promised Land", a memoir of his 8 years in the White House, including the intense campaign leading up to his first term as president. Amazing detail, riveting accounts regarding his contributions to US politics and policy. Always touched by the way he puts his wife, children, and family, first. Obama's respect and regard for women is a shining thread throughout his book.
