Dowell Families
   
Welcome back!  

We have hit the ground running this week.  Our teachers have been able to share information about our students in our data meetings this week and I am so proud of the work that we have accomplished so far this year.  We are seeing great growth with our students and we are looking forward to continuing to push our students to the next level this semester.  

One of the ways we plan to fulfill our goals is to implement "Pride Time". Mrs. Bullock sent out an email earlier this week with the description and the time changes for our "Pride Time" on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  This is also in our newsletter below.  We are very excited about this time during the school day to extend and intervene with our students and their learning.  Please know that we are starting out small to get started but we have so many goals to achieve with this time.  We will begin on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.  
 
Thank you so much for helping us in the carpool line this week.  Things are going much smoother and it is safer for our students.  
 
Remember that Monday is a holiday for staff and students and our offices will be closed.

Pride Time Announcement

We are proud to announce a new program coming to Dowell Middle School! Starting January 16th we will incorporate a 25 minute time period from 10:30 - 10:55 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday called Pride Time*. During Pride Time students could be doing a variety of different things from classroom intervention and extension activities to working with their elective teachers to using our brand new MakerSpace or Creation Den. 

We are very excited about the opportunities that this will afford our students including closing achievement gaps, content enrichment, creative expression and more. As we start this process, we know that there may be some changes along the way to best meet the needs of our students and we appreciate your flexibility during this time. 

We look forward to this exciting new opportunity for our students, and cannot wait to see the great achievements they make as a result.

Winter Ilness

We would like to remind all parents of the importance of keeping sick children home.  When a child comes to school ill, he/she can spread illness by coughing, touching his/her nose/mouth and then touching objects that other students come in contact with.
 
Remember that fever is not the only sign of true illness and that fever is usually a late sign of an illness, or an illness that is progressing.
 
If your child is out sick remember to always send in a note from the Dr or a parent note.
 
MISD Health policies are in place to help insure a healthy school where students can learn and grow.

Student Possession 
of Medication

McKinney ISD has a no tolerance policy for students in possession of medication of any kind, including herbal supplements, vitamins, and all over the counter medications including cough drops/lozenges. 

All medications must be delivered and picked up by a parent or guardian. Students are not allowed to drop off or take home their medication(s) from the school clinic. 

All medications are to be stored in the nurse's office with the exception of prescribed medications for the treatment of asthma, Anaphylaxis and diabetes.  Please see the campus nurse if your child has one of these conditions.

National Junior  Honor Society

Dowell's National Junior Honor Society members are in need of suggestions to support our community through volunteer work.  If you know of a need that our students can fill, please email Christina Cantrell at ccantrell@mckinneyisd.net.
Academic UIL

Academic UIL will have our Winter Invitational January 19th-20th. The schedule of event times can be found at acadowell.weebly.com by asking the coach for the event. 

Students should plan to arrive 20 minutes prior to the start of their event to check in with their coach. The locations for this competition are as follows: Friday, January 19th will be at Evans Middle School with the check in being in the cafeteria and Saturday, January 20th will be here at Dowell MS with the check in being in the cafeteria. If you have any questions, please email your coach.

We have a lot of exciting things going on in January.
 
The Student ViewPoint Survey launches January 19th and runs through February 8th. We will offer a Chicken Spaghetti Luncheon to every campus that achieves completed surveys for 75% of their student population. Students will receive a cookie when they show validation of a completed survey to the cafeteria cashiers. Every student that completes the survey is entered into a drawing to win a Polaroid Instant Camera and also entered into a national drawing for Beats Headphones.

Alarm Clock Specials in January will promote new menu items at breakfast. Students who eat breakfast on Alarm Clock Special days have a chance to win $15 iTunes cards
