Volunteer Opportunities 

Many of you have asked “how can I help care for …?” And for a while now at Duke Memorial we have been talking about creating a deeper culture of connection. Perhaps this was prevenient grace, going before us, to prepare us for such a time as this. Here are some opportunities to connect, to help, in a variety of ways.
Church Connecting
Connect with an older person from Duke Memorial to offer your support and care. Contact Pastor Jennifer  to ‘adopt a friend’ in our church.

Community Connecting
Partnering with Jonathan Wilson Hartgrove and The School for Conversion in pairing young volunteers in Durham with elderly folks. Young people can sign up here . Our ministry team is working with this group to determine other needs and how we can help. 

Your financial gift is important now more than ever…. The April 5th CROP Walk will now be hosted online! "Walkers and Sponsors are still needed - register and donate online . (team name: Duke Memorial UMC)

Durham CARES [Opportunity Compilation]

These words remind us of the importance of partnerships in the ministry of the gospel. They have some wonderful ideas about how we can love well as people of faith during this unusual time we find ourselves in. Check out their work here. 

Interfaith Food Shuttle
This organization supplies the food for our monthly Mobile Market. They will update their volunteer needs here . This Saturday's mobile market at Duke Memorial has been cancelled.

Durham Public Schools
DPS is asking that at this time churches NOT contact them about volunteering opportunities. They are currently using trained and paid human resources that are already present in their system. They will let us know when the conditions arise for us to volunteer.
DPS is working with the Durham Public Schools Foundation to identify opportunities for volunteers to make a difference in our community during this crisis. Organizations may reach out to the DPS Foundation at

Foodbank of Central & Eastern North Carolina
This organization supplies food to many area food pantries. They will update their volunteer needs here .

Urban Ministries of Durham
A partner ministry of Duke Memorial that meets many of our community’s physical needs. They will update their information here .
Urban ministries has created a special Amazon wish list for our COVID-19 preparations . Please click on the link to purchase some of these critical supplies for the 250+ men, women and children who rely on UMD to provide meals, other food, clothing, hygiene items and shelter each day. Items will be shipped directly to our campus, and all gifts are tax-deductible. Note: There are several items that we need but cannot find on Amazon. We'd love to have help obtaining: non-contact digital infrared thermometers (1-2), Clorox bleach, spray disinfectant and hand sanitizer.
  • We will continue Sunday worship via live stream through at least March 29th. Thank you to all who joined us virtually for worship this past Sunday. It is wonderful to know we are all still connected during this uncertain time.

  • All in-person gatherings for formation groups including Sunday Sunday School, Youth Group, and Small Groups are cancelled through the end of March (03/31). We invite you to continue meeting virtually through

  • All in-person committee meetings are cancelled through the end of March (03/31). Ministry team members will reach out to Committee chairs with instructions for facilitating a virtual meeting.

  • The Church office is closed through the end of March (03/31). This will help ensure the safety and health of our ministry team members. All staff will continue to be available via email and those with pastoral care needs can call Pastor Heather at 919-218-2129.
