North Carolina ROTC Roundtable Highlights Contributions of African American Servicemembers to NC
The 2nd North Carolina ROTC Roundtable was held at Fayetteville State University in March, and aimed to educate, develop, and inform future leaders by illuminating the contributions of African Americans who paved the way for today’s service members of color. NCDMVA Secretary Walter E. Gaskin, LtGen. USMC, Ret., Gen. Michael X. Garrett, Commanding General FORSCOM, Maj. Gen. Rodney Anderson Brig. Gen Arnold Gordon Bray, and former AUSA president CSM. McFowler discussed the legacy of African American servicemembers and what it takes now for up-and-coming cadets to forge ahead, and become leaders in furtherance of the mission of our national defense.

The ROTC Roundtable was a collaboration between NCDMVA, NC State Archives, Fayetteville State University, and the Association of the United States Army (AUSA).

Governor Cooper Encourages Employers to Apply for HIRE Vets Medallion Program
RALEIGH: Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders are encouraging North Carolina employers to hire veterans and to apply for recognition with a HIRE Vets Medallion Award, an official program of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Respecting the Sacrifices of our Veterans
"We Wanted to Fight" Exhibit Continues Tour across North Carolina
The traveling exhibit “We Wanted to Fight: Black North Carolinians in World War II” Leaves Elizabeth City State University School of Humanities and travels to Museum of Albemarle, where it will be throughout the month of April. If you are in the beautiful northeastern part of our state, be sure to visit the museum and this truly remarkable exhibit.  
Dorothea Dix Care Unit Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
On March 25 Cape Fear Valley Health officially opened the Dorothea Dix Adolescent Care Unit on its campus in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The facility will house 16 inpatient beds for adolescents ages 12-17 and provide acute inpatient behavioral health care with around-the-clock staff with at least one psychiatrist and four psychiatry residents present. 

Psychiatrist Sree Jadapalle, M.D. will be the service director at the new facility and the fellowship program director for a new Child Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship that begins in the summer. 
Cemetery for Military Veterans Dedicated in Cherokee
A dedication ceremony for a new veterans ceremony was held Tuesday, March 29th in the Wolfetown Community of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. The dedication took place at the American Legion Post 143.

The Burgess-Oocumma Veterans Memorial Cemetery will now provide a final dignified resting place for those who served. The two-acre plot of land was named in honor of Native American veterans John Edward Oocumma and John Decatur Burgess, both of whom were killed in Vietnam. The Burgess family dedicated the land. The North Carolinas Department of Military and Veteran Affairs (DMVA) Secretary Walter E. Gaskin, said “It's about time that our country recognizes the sacrifice of those who have come forth.”

The cemetery will be a coveted place of honor set against the backdrop of beautiful Cherokee N.C., an enduring tribute to all who served.

North Carolina National Guard Opens Museum
The North Carolina National Guard highly anticipated museum is now open. Last month, guardsmen installed a tank and combat vehicle at the site of the museum just off of Blue Ridge Road, and directly across the street from the NC art museum.

The North Carolina National Guard Museum will house a collection of artifacts, documents and memorabilia of historical significance, to be preserved and displayed throughout the museum.

NCDMVA Holds 2022 Annual VSO Veterans Services Training Conference
NCDMVA and NCACVSO annual training conference
The North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs conducted its annual training conference March 14-17 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. The conference was attended by Veteran Service Officers from the NCDMVA and the NC Association of County Veteran Service

Officers. Nearly 150 attendees received twelve Continuous Education Units from training presented by the National Veterans Legal Services Program. Training included topics such as Inadequate VA exams, Gulf War Illness claims, joint disability claims and duty to assist in locating records. Secretary Gaskin attended the afternoon session on March 16th and spoke to the attendees. He relayed his appreciation for the incredible work each Veteran Service Officer does to ensure our veterans receive the benefits they have earned.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Winston-Salem Regional Office held it's annual Veterans Benefits Live, VA in My Town (former Veterans Experience Action Center (VEAC)) in Cary, North Carolina. Along with the American Legion Post 67, Veterans Experience Action Center (VEAC), brings thousands of veterans face-to-face with Service Officers, VBA and VHA employees and others offering assistance and resources.

May 10 & 11: VA Women's heaRT Reengagement Training
It’s never too late to enroll in VA health care services. Sign up for the VA Women’s Health  
Reengagement Training (heaRT) to help you gain a better understanding of how VA can  
support your health care needs.  
 
If you are a woman with military service experience and are not enrolled in VA health care,  
this program is for you. We are partnering with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs  
(VA), Office of Women’s Health (OWH) to bring the nation’s Veteran women unenrolled in  
VA services a training program to help you understand what VA health care services are  
available and how to access these services. 
 
Through the VA Women’s Health Reengagement Training (heaRT), you will have the  
opportunity to connect with fellow Veteran women in your community and learn what  
Veteran-and women-centered VA health care services are available to you: 
  • Preventive care and wellness 
  • Women’s health services 
  • Whole health & mental health services 
  • How to determine VA care eligibility and enroll in VA 
 
The virtual training will be a women-only, one-time, 4-hour session.
