One artist who will be showcased at Art from the Heart is Michele McDermott. Before acquiring a disability, Michele was an accomplished stained glass artist and enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. After multiple strokes and a heart attack, she found her fingers no longer worked the same. Determined to continue expressing her creativity, Michele started exploring new artistic avenues.
Michele was introduced to Disability Network Eastern Michigan (DNEM) by attending a monthly Stroke Support Group. She now regularly participates in DNEM's art classes, embracing new forms of artistic expression, including drawing, painting, sculpting clay, and making mosaics and jewelry.
Before her disability, Michele was an avid kayaker, biker and singer. Her dexterity and stamina have changed but her adventurous spirit remains strong. She also enjoys adaptive kayaking and cycling with DNEM, finding it rewarding to explore new ways of doing the things she loves.
We invite you to experience Michele's unique creations, as well as the works of other talented artists with disabilities. All artwork will be available for purchase. Half of the proceeds will go directly to the artists and the other half will be reinvested in DNEM's programs, like those described above.
It promises to be a memorable evening where you can enjoy delicious food, wonderful entertainment, and bid on incredible auction items and raffles!
Don't miss out - tickets are selling fast! Individual tickets are $50. If you reserve a table of 10 for $450 in March you will get one free ticket (a $500 value).
