FEBRUARY MEETING – TOPICS & SPEAKERS

DOD’s February meeting is set for 2:00-3:30 p.m. Sat., Feb 22nd, at Date Palm Country Club, 36200 Date Palm Drive Cathedral City.  
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGAGEMENT ON FEBRUARY 22nd
The environment and climate change are of huge concern to Americans, so DOD’s February meeting will focus on related subjects. Speakers expected on Sat., Feb. 22, include: Lesly Figueroa, an East Valley activist, on environmental racism; Palm Springs City Councilman Geoff Kors, on Desert Communities Energy plans; Chuck Parker with the Salton Sea Coalition.
Please bring items or donations for Well in the Desert. They need: personal items (shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sunscreen, combs & brushes, etc.) and gently used clothing. For the full list, visit:

Per our bylaws, DOD must hold Board elections every February, with certain positions rotating. The current 2020 slate, for two-year terms, is:

DOD’s past president Robert Westwood and husband George Garcia are hosting a fund-raiser for Deni-Antoinette Mazingo, who is running for CA Assembly, 42 nd District, at their home in Rancho Mirage. DOD is co-sponsoring the event, which is a brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020. Tickets are $50. You may pay at the door with cash or checks. Citizens Lobby Chair Steve Brooks and President Dori Smith are organizing a get-out-the-vote (GOTV) effort for Democrats of the Desert.  Please join us at from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Feb. 24, at Date Palm Country Club to contact voters , encouraging them to vote in the March 3 primary. We’re looking for folks -- who can bring laptops and cell phones – to call voters. Volunteers also may choose to write postcards and/or complete personal letters to voters, provided by Vote Forward. “ADOPT” VOTERS & VOTE YOURSELF
Tuesday, March 3, is your chance to have a say about which Democrats who are seeking office will advance, including for President. Remember…

• To get started, verify your voter registration at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov and then visit HowToVoteForPresident.sos.ca.gov to make a plan to vote in the primary.
• You can change your party affiliation or update your voter registration anytime you want by re-registering to vote at registertovote.ca.gov .
• Take the time now to make a plan to vote, to help ensure a smoother voting experience and allow you to focus on choosing whom to vote for.
Please “adopt” five voters. You might help them get registered. Please call them on Feb. 25 to remind them to complete – AND SIGN – their mail-in ballots. And call them on March 3 to remind them to vote or even drive them to the polls.
We CAN help increase Democratic voter turnout in this all-important election year!
DOD’S MARCH 21 FUNDRAISER POSTPONED
Last month, we announced a planned fund-raising event with Jill Wine-Banks, Watergate assistant prosecutor and MSNBC analyst, on March 21, 2020. Unfortunately, due to conflicts in her schedule, that date has been cancelled. The DOD Fundraising Committee is working to identify a major fund-raising event and other efforts, so look for more information soon.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY NEEDS ELECTION OFFICERS
The Riverside County Registrar of Voters needs people to help at the polls for the March 3 primary…and you can earn pay. To get information and/or apply, visit https://voteinfo.net/EOapp.asp

All Election Officers must be: able to read and write English, California residents, and 18 or older on or before March 3. Students 16-17 may also apply and must meet certain criteria (for more information visit  https://voteinfo.net/polls/student.asp ) Election Day begins at 6:15 a.m. and ends at approximately 9 p.m.

The stipends paid are: $125 for Inspectors (experience required) or $90 for Precinct Officers (experience not required). You may also earn an added $20 for attending the training and then working the polls.
2020 Membership dues are still payable.
