OCTOBER MEETING

Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2 pm, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1581 Cambridge Boulevard, Columbus 43212. We meet @ 1:30 pm for snacks and get-to-know members prior to the meeting.

  • Hospitality asks us to bring fall goodies as we celebrate our 48th Anniversary!

There will not be a Junior Division meeting in October.

Juniors will meet again in November, Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 pm. We are discussing our choice of charity for the year.

CHARITIES

The October charity is the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio. For those who may not be familiar with it, the Ronald McDonald House gives families a home-away-from-home right across the street from Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Open 365 days a year, the Columbus Ronald McDonald House offers comfortable bedrooms with private baths, fully-equipped kitchens with dining areas, play rooms, laundry facilities, a meditation room, exercise room and informal gathering areas. The House also features isolated continuing care suites for a child’s chemotherapy or post-transplant care.

We are collecting travel size toiletries for the families staying at the House - shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, body gel or bar of soap, and toothpaste. If you brought back toiletries from hotels while traveling this summer, donate those items also.

We are starting now to solicit names of families needing assistance at Christmas. DOE members who know of a family in need that could benefit by being “adopted’ should send an email to Marianne Wenger mwenger1101@gmail.com describing their situation. Deadline to submit:  October 15 - FIRM. This will allow sufficient time to review the families, meet with them to determine needs, organize a wish-list spreadsheet, prepare the sign-up genius, and create tags for the Shamrock Club “tree” – all needing done - before - Black Friday.

Does anyone have a small or medium-size Christmas tree in good shape you're willing to donate to one of the Adopt A Families? One family would love one for their baby's First Christmas, also if you hvae working tree lights and ornaments in good shape, please let me know.

Leftover Halloween Candy

If you or family and friends have leftover Halloween candy, please bring it to the meeting. Each year there is a group of members who make and fill stockings for each child in our adopted families. Thank you in advance.

THANK YOU for everyone’s generosity to our charity collections each month.

Thank you, Marianne Wenger, mwenger1101@gmail.com.

SOCKTOBER 2026

Greetings Irish Community! As of October 1, 2026 the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians will once again begin collecting new socks for donation to the needy and homeless to be distributed by St. Aloysius Outreach Program on Thanksgiving.

All sizes are needed from infant to adult. There will be collection bins at both Tara Hall and the Shamrock Club. The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians is humbly asking the Irish Community to be generous in the gathering of these much needed and gratefully received socks as the winter months are just around the corner. Amazon has socks in bulk a vailable online and the Dollar stores are also a good source for bargains.

Last year we "all", collected 803 pairs. We are shooting for the stars to at least match that number. The collection will run from October 1 through and including October 31.

Thank you in advance for your consideration to be an integral part of making this

drive a success.

DOE MAGIC

In 1980, a group of Daughters of Erin ladies crafted a beautiful Irish quilt which was then entered into a fundraising raffle (of course - lol).

All the members sold tickets, and I did my part. One ticket I sold was to my dear friend, Mary Kaye Moran Hertz. Lo and behold, her name was pulled.

She came to a subsequent meeting with me and was presented with the quilt! As I recall most of the quilters were there that day to give away their masterpiece. Mary Kaye treasures the quilt to this day!

Interesting sidelight, at the time her name was pulled, my name as the seller was not known. She was out of town after the sudden death of her father, and when she returned, she had multiple messages from the DOE on her answering machine. Someone thought her father had entered her name (another Moran?), but she knew it was me. So she always says that this is the quilt that her father gave her on October 28, 1980 (the day he died).

So much magic the DOE has spread over the years!

Member since late 1978-early 1979
