Until recently, publicly available information was limited for two key factors that determine the value of energy efficiency and other distributed resources (DERs): (1) end-use load profiles (EULPs), which quantify how and when electricity is used, and (2) savings shapes, which measure the difference between the hourly use of electricity in the baseline condition and the hourly use post-installation of the energy efficiency measure. EULPs and savings shapes are critically important to utilities, public utility commissions, state energy offices and stakeholders to better value distributed energy resources in utility resource planning, state and local energy planning, and programs.
To fill this data gap, the U.S. Department of Energy supported the development of publicly available, calibrated, validated, and spatially and temporally resolved EULPs and savings shapes that are representative of the U.S. building stock. The foundational dataset can be accessed using three options — aggregates, web viewer, and individual models — and has many applications.

The AGF COLLECTANDRAIN FLOODELIMINATOR Model 5900 is designed to stop the flood of water that may result when a dry fire sprinkler system’s auxiliary drain malfunctions due to a freeze and break, causing the dry valve to trip. The Model 5900 allows condensate to collect normally in an auxiliary drain, but if confronted with a pressurized flow of water from a tripped dry valve the internal mechanism closes, shutting off the flow to the malfunctioning auxiliary drain, eliminating external flooding.
The Model 5900 is suitable for dry and pre-action systems, compressed air or nitrogen, requires no power, automatically resets when the system is restored to operation, and can easily be retrofitted onto existing small volume low-point drains or auxiliary drains.

The first facilities industry event this year returns to Baltimore with NFMT 2023, the National Facility Management and Technology Conference & Expo. The McMorrow Reports & FMLink have been attending for at least 20 years, and we know our readers should, too. Facilities managers, executives, engineers and allied professionals will gather March 21-23 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland. Both the educational conference sessions, starting on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. and ending on Thursday at 4:45 p.m., and the expo floor are bountiful with exhibitors from all segments of FM.
Use NFMT’s event explorer while registering to pre-register for sessions. Build your agenda to include conference sessions roundtables, networking functions, product zone sessions, and time in the exhibit hall. Research the education sessions and the exhibitors to successfully choose the ones that apply to your position and company needs. The conference tracks include: Asset Management, Energy & Sustainability, Future Trends, Health & Safety, Maintenance & Operations, Security, Technology and Think Tank.

Global building technology society ASHRAE has released the latest version of its benchmark energy efficiency standard, ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2022, Energy Efficiency Standard for Sites and Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. The latest version includes an expanded scope for building sites and major additions appearing for the first time in a minimum-efficiency U.S. model energy standard or code.
"We have identified some ambiguity in the standard by offering guidance on regulating only buildings and not sites," explained ASHRAE Standing Standard Project Committee 90.1 Chair Don Brundage. "Examples include exterior and parking lot lighting, which, if not provided through the main electric panel in the building, were not within the scope of Standard 90.1 previously. Including sites also clarifies that onsite renewables could count as credits towards energy usage across the entire building project, even if located in a parking lot or other onsite location, not only with in the footprint of the building. We are continuing to improve efficiency and reduce energy use through updates to Standard 90.1, meeting the needs of the design community and keeping Standard 90.1 pertinent, as demand grows for reduced energy use and carbon emissions."
