DOM Research by the Numbers

In 2024, DOM research funding grew by over 15% for the second consecutive year. Timothy Henrich, Annie Luetkemeyer, Sue Lynch, Jesus Ramirez-Valles, Lekshmi Santhosh, and Prescott Woodruff (pictured left to right, top to bottom) were awarded the largest grants and contracts in the department. Residency Program Match Results

We had another terrific residency match this year! We matched a superb cohort of 64 students hailing from 32 different medical schools, including ten students from the UCSF School of Medicine. Five of our incoming interns are physician-scientists. View the list here.

Endowment for Innovation in Nephrology

Chi-Yuan Hsu

Chi-Yuan Hsu received a $5 million gift from the Marc and Lynne Benioff Endowment for Innovation in Nephrology. The Benioffs were inspired by Chi’s outstanding leadership and the work of the Division of Nephrology at UCSF Health.

Richard Locksley was named this year’s Faculty Research Lecturer in Basic Science by the UCSF Academic Senate.

Arianne Teherani has been named a 2025 AERA Fellow by the American Educational Research Association.

Neeta Thakur has been appointed the faculty director of Clinical Research Operations for the Clinical Trials Operations Unit under UCSF’s Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI).

The UCSF Lung Transplant Program received the 2025 INTERLINK Chairman’s Award, awarded to the top-performing lung transplant program.

DOM in the News

Peter Chin-Hong advised getting vaccinated (KCRW), frequent hand
and surface washing (Good Morning America), and consuming only pasteurized dairy (NBC News) to prevent illness. He also expressed concern that a recent study, which reported that Paxlovid did not significantly reduce hospitalizations, had excluded high-risk, unvaccinated adults aged 75 and older (Washington Post).

Anna Chodos emphasized the importance of treating hearing or vision loss to prevent dementia (NBC News).

Monica Gandhi suggested that those 65 or older, or those traveling internationally, get a booster to prevent measles. (Mercury News).

Gerald Hsu discussed the impact of federal funding cuts to research, physician training, and Medicare (San Francisco Chronicle).

Margot Kushel emphasized that treating homelessness requires a robust set of services (Vox), including medical care and devices (San Francisco Chronicle).

Sei Lee suggested that diabetic patients may not need to be as careful about their diet as they get older (New York Times).

Gregory Marcus reported that coffee may reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke (KCBS-AM).

Michael Peluso recommended increasing the number of trials to better understand Long COVID (NPR).

Priya Shete warned that the recent cuts to USAID could potentially cost millions of lives (The Today Show).

Dolores Shoback recommended diet and exercise as better alternatives to longevity supplements (San Francisco Chronicle).

Robert Wachter was quoted in the obituary of James Reason, who first introduced the Swiss cheese model of organizational accidents, which became the foundation for the field of patient safety (New York Times).

Joel Ernst: a grant of $442K over two years from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for a project entitled, “A novel approach to determine the value of ESAT-6 as an antigen in M. tuberculosis infection and vaccines.”
