DOM Ranked Among the Nation’s Best
|
|
|
Our DOM divisions achieved exceptional national recognition this year, led by geriatrics and pulmonary/lung surgery, which were ranked #1 in the nation by US News & World Report, a first for any DOM division. Several other divisions also placed top 10, including rheumatology (#6), endocrinology (#8), gastroenterology (#8), and cancer (#10). Together, these rankings helped UCSF Medical Center once again earn a place on the U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll and tie for the top-ranked hospital in California. Read more here.

Teva Brender noted that AI-drafted patient portal messages could help reduce clinicians’ administrative burden (MedPage Today).
Peter Chin-Hong discussed the growing Cyclospora outbreak, including its increasing domestic spread, ways to reduce infection risk, and the public health response (CNN, KQED, ABC News, San Francisco Chronicle). He also urged annual COVID-19 vaccination for people at highest risk (Los Angeles Times) and explained how warmer temperatures can accelerate mosquito-borne disease transmission (SFGate).
Anna Chodos noted that participating in cultural activities may help support healthier aging (Medical News Today).
Maria Dall’Era highlighted advances in lupus treatment, while emphasizing the need for more personalized therapies and earlier intervention (EMJ Reviews).
Elizabeth Dzeng said that AI-generated portal messages may free up more time for direct patient care (MedPage Today).
Monica Gandhi warned that bacteria linked to a Meta data center construction site should not contaminate drinking water (SFGate). She also expressed optimism about a new Ebola treatment trial and emphasized the importance of contact tracing, quarantine, and effective treatments to control outbreaks (AOL, Medical News Today).
Chi-yuan Hsu and Meyeon Park advocated for routine APOL1 genetic testing to better assess kidney donation risk in Black donor candidates (Medical Xpress).
Margot Kushel emphasized that homelessness is driven more by housing affordability than individual factors (NPR, WIRED). She also called for regional solutions to expand access to affordable housing (The Mercury News).
Christopher Lee recommended carrots for blood pressure control, as they are rich in potassium and carotenoids which support healthy blood vessels (Verywell Health).
Pamela Ling warned that repeated nicotine exposure changes the brain over time, making addiction difficult to overcome (NBC News).
Annie Luetkemeyer cautioned that doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis may increase antibiotic resistance in some bacteria (KQED).
Edward Machtinger found that people with HIV often die prematurely from preventable causes beyond the virus itself (San Francisco Chronicle). He also discussed the development of trauma-informed HIV care (KCBS).
Katherine Malcolm cautioned that while sleep trackers are generally accurate, they can contribute to anxiety and an unhealthy pursuit of a "perfect" night's sleep (San Francisco Chronicle, KCBS).
Gregory Marcus found that drinking coffee was associated with increased daily physical activity (The Washington Post). He also found that consuming up to five cups of coffee a day is generally safe for heart health (Wall Street Journal, U.S. News & World Report, San Francisco Chronicle).
Michael Peluso noted that a study found ensitrelvir reduced the risk of symptomatic COVID-19 after exposure, but did not find that it prevents long COVID (Cancer Health).
Rita Redberg cautioned that although severe muscle complications from statins are rare, other side effects can still significantly affect quality of life (Healthline).
Jennifer Rosenbluth is using miniature replicas of patients' tumors to identify the most effective cancer treatments (Cancer Health, Medical Xpress).
Neeta Thakur warned that climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme heat events and emphasized the need for resilient homes and neighborhoods to protect vulnerable communities (NBC News).
Diana Thiara highlighted the potential of GLP-1 medications to treat hidradenitis suppurativa (MedPage Today) and encouraged more thoughtful conversations about weight, obesity, and GLP-1 use (KQED).
Robert Wachter suggested that AI health tools should be evaluated against the current standard of care rather than against perfection (Mashable). He also warned that AI could erode clinical skills and patient trust if not used thoughtfully (Scientific American, Medscape).
