Welcome to our new faculty members! We have 91 new faculty members: 76 at UCSF Health, 12 at ZSFG, and three at the SFVAHCS. Our faculty bring their passion and innovation to UCSF and will propel our department to new levels of excellence. View new faculty members and orientation dates.

Honors and News

Anil Agarwal has been selected to serve as the interim chief of the medicine service and vice chair of medicine for the SFVAHCS.

Adriann Begay testified before the Indian and Insular Affairs Subcommittee, advocating for GME at Indian Health Services. Her remarks begin at 1:20:00 in this video.

Anna Beyer received the Teacher of the Year Award from Sutter Health CPMC.

David Chia has been appointed the director of the Health Professions Education Pathway for UCSF GME.

Matt Durstenfeld and Hannah Leslie received Early Career Research Excellence Awards from the UCSF-Bay Area Center for AIDS Research.

Charlotte Hurabielle Claverie was selected for the Irene Perstein Award.

James Frank has been appointed co-director of the DOM Program for Clinician Educator Success (PRO-cess).

Alekist Quach has been appointed the associate program director for Ambulatory Affairs for the Internal Medicine Residency.

Marilyn Thomas was selected for the Irene Perstein-Mt. Zion Award.

Josue Zapata has been appointed the director of the Health Systems Leadership Pathway for UCSF GME.

DOM in the News

Mark Anderson highlighted an experimental type 1 diabetes treatment that could eliminate the need for daily insulin injections (New York Times).

Peter Chin-Hong explained how Nimbus became the dominant COVID-19 subvariant (KQED, ABC News). He also described the subvariant's symptoms (Los Angeles Times) and stressed the importance of regular vaccination (Scientific American).

Sanket Dhruva reported that deaths from high blood pressure have doubled since 1993 and emphasized the need for more accessible prevention strategies (San Francisco Chronicle).

Monica Gandhi expressed excitement about Lenacapavir, a new prevention drug for HIV infection (KCBS AM, STAT News).

Eric Goosby emphasized the scope and impact of the U.S. AIDS relief program, which is currently under budget review (NPR).

Ashwin Kotwal underscored the health benefits of social connection (San Francisco Chronicle), especially regarding Alzheimer’s disease and dementia risk (BBC News).

Margot Kushel discussed the unique challenges of homelessness initiatives for people living in RVs, buses, and cars (KQED).

Gregory Allen: a grant of $5.6M over two years from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine for a project entitled, “FM-IL2 CAR T cells for pancreatic cancer.”

Maxime Kinet: a grant of $1.2M over five years from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases for a project entitled, “Defining the role of Pi16-expressing fibroblasts in mouse and human fibrosing skin disease.”
