DOM Cohort Grant

|
Shoshana Zha was awarded the Department of Medicine’s Cohort Grant for 2024. Her project entitled, “DISCOVER-BeNTM: discovery and innovation to improve therapy for bronchiectasis and pulmonary NTM disease,” will receive $100,000 in support.

Muriel Babey diagnosed a rare, typically-overlooked condition known as pregnancy- and lactation-associated osteoporosis (PLO) (Washington Post).
Peter Chin-Hong warned that we haven’t contained the H5N1 virus within dairy cows yet (KQED). He also explained why we can be a little less concerned about this summer’s rise in COVID cases (ABC News) and how to spot the lesser-known gastrointestinal symptoms (New York Times).
Triveni DeFries and Marlene Martin promoted the UCSF Latinx Center of Excellence’s Program for Education in Drugs and Alcohol for Latine (PEDAL) (KQED).
Sanket Dhruva and Rita Redberg advised that more randomized trials are needed before liquid biopsy tests can reliably detect cancer. (Stat News).
Margot Kushel found that homeless populations have a substantially higher mortlaity rate than housed individuals (New York Times). She warned a recent Supreme Court ruling on encampent removal could aggravate homelessness (US News & World Report) and advised against punitive measures for symptoms of addiction (San Francisco Chronicle).

Liong Bing Liem correctly diagnosed a young father whose symptoms had been ignored by multiple hospitals (Today Show).
Edward Machtinger underscored the importance of preventing trauma in childhood (San Francisco Chronicle).
Michael Peluso discussed new imaging techniques to understand the full impact of long COVID throughout the body (Stat News).
Gina Solomon warned that broad heat waves expose thousands to illness or worse (San Francisco Chronicle), and that the longer the heat wave, the more our kidneys and cardiovascular systems are stressed (KQED).
Eric Widera explained how the Alzheimer’s Association's new diagnostic criteria are controversial and will overdiagnose the disease when applied across the entire population (CNN).
