Douglas Bauer noted more older men are developing osteoporosis and fractures and better screening and treatment could improve quality of life (New York Times, East Bay Times).
Peter Chin-Hong said flu is already widespread in Asia and urged vaccination as respiratory virus season ramps up (Los Angeles Times). He called the discovery of a more severe mpox strain in California a “wake-up call” for those at risk to get vaccinated (SFGate, Healthbeat).
Kelly Johnson urged vigilance after three Californians were hospitalized with Clade 1 mpox, the first locally spread cases of a more severe strain in the U.S. (New York Times).
Ashwin Kotwal emphasized that staying socially connected can boost health and longevity (New York Times) and noted that, for many older adults aging alone, dying without support is a growing concern (Washington Post).
Alexander Marson praised this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine as a landmark in understanding how the immune system maintains balance (New York Times).
Michael Peluso called for a coordinated national strategy on long COVID, including improved diagnostics, more trials, and industry engagement (PBS NewsHour).
Carla Perissinotto said efforts like California’s “Meet Six Neighbors” campaign are vital, as social connection can be as protective as loneliness is harmful (San Francisco Chronicle).
Lisa Rotenstein found primary physicians spend about 62 hours a week caring for patients, underscoring a need to rebalance and better support primary care (MedPage Today).
Michael Steinman said the updated Beers Criteria help clinicians choose safer treatments for older adults to replace risky medications and improve care (Medscape).
Eric Verdin said most people could live healthily to 95 by focusing on four proven habits: good nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and strong social ties (Time).
Kin Yuen explained that while gaining an hour in the fall can ease sleep loss for some, less daylight may worsen mood disorders, but not changing clocks can also disrupt sleep (San Francisco Chronicle, NBC News).
