February is always a great month for DOVES as it is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. In past years, it has become a tradition for DOVES staff to go to Big Bear High School and talk to the Freshman about healthy relationships.
I arrived at the shelter a scared and nervous mother with three school-aged boys. I had finally left my abusive and highly controlling husband. I was so worried about my boys. How would they adjust to a new home, a new school and being away from their father? We were welcomed with such love and kindness by all of the staff at the shelter. Our room was neat and clean, and we were amazed at the amount of food that was available to us. My boys were registered in school and even got a special tour before the started. They are settling in nicely and are happy.
I am now able to catch my breath and address my needs. I have highly valued my time with Rebecca. Her knowledge and patience made it possible for me to get a Temporary Restraining Order against my husband. I know that I have such a long road ahead of me, but I find strength because of what I have learned here at DOVES. Thank you so very much to DOVES for all that they have given to both myself and my children.
