A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to using art to help end domestic violence. DOVES collaborates with AWBW by offering a Creative Healing workshop for both shelter and local clients every Monday morning. Outreach Advocate Dawn Hull is a certified AWBW facilitator and leads the workshop in accordance with the healing arts curriculum. These workshops provide a unique “Window of Time” for participants- a safe, non-judgmental environment where they can authenticate and express themselves in new ways.
Traumatic experiences cause victims’ brains to be on high alert. Simple artistic activities calm the parts of the brain that have been overworked by trauma and assist victims in releasing mental tension. Through the process of making art, survivors can develop greater self-awareness, express thoughts and feelings, and regain a sense of control. By drawing, sculpting, painting, collaging, writing and more — their voices are heard, and future potential is seen.
