Domestic Violence Awareness Month Programs a Success for DOVES

October was a great month at the DOVES Outreach! Our clients enjoyed the “Fall Fashion Day”, an event put on by volunteer Janet Grace Nelson, where survivors of domestic violence have a day of beauty which includes expanding their wardrobes and make-up makeovers .

The DOVES Outreach is also happy to welcome Janet Grace as she facilitates her “Jumpstart 4 Joy” group, a four week program which focuses on self-empowerment. DOVES would like to send a special thanks to Janet Grace, who has been working with us to help victims build new, successful lives free of violence.

Tell us a little about yourself:
I have lived in Big Bear since 1988 and have been involved in the school district that entire time as a teacher, teacher on assignment, and am now the Executive Director of Educational Services. I have four practically perfect children who were all born and raised in Big Bear Valley. I’ve been married, to the same man, for 32.5 years and have decided to keep him.

Why did you choose to join the DOVES board?
First of all, I am impressed with the commitment and focus demonstrated by the leadership. I wanted to be part of this team. The work DOVES does is meaningful, purposeful, and compassionate and has a lasting impact on those it touches. I am proud to part of this organization.

What is your favorite part about working with the DOVES organization?
For me, it is the people I work with and seeing the tangible results of what we do and represent.
What do you do for fun?
I am a runner and have two four legged running partners. I also love to read, hike, and enjoy the outdoors. The best is when I can spend time with my family (two legged and four legged) outdoors enjoying the beautiful place in which I am fortunate enough to live.
 What is your favorite quote?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not unto your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3: 5 & 5
A Survivor's Shared Story

"The DOVES classes opened my eyes to what I went through. I now look for red flags. I am in no rush for another relationship, but I look for red flags in the people I deal with every day. I didn't have faith in myself in the past, but now I know what to look for and I am hopeful."

DOVES was also able to assist this client with vision assistance and set her up with an eye appointment through the Lions Club program in the Bear Valley.
