“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,
an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.” President Joseph Biden
| Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter August14, 2023 | |
Good morning Democrats!
I want to thank everyone who showed up for our monthly Second Saturday meeting at the Willard Cantina on Saturday, and for those of you who couldn’t make it, you missed a great meeting. I want to especially thank DPNM Vice Chair at Large Manny Crespin for updating us on what’s happening at the state party level and at the DNC. A great update on the fantastic accomplishments by the Biden Administration for our state!
Also, thanks to Sam Schropp for the summary of news from the County Commission, to DPNM CD-1 Vice Chair Greg Seeley, Rural Caucus Treasurer Amy Aguilar-Noriega, and Ward A Chair Augustine Montoya who attended representing the DPNM Fuerzas Unidas Caucus for their interesting and enlightening reports. And, of course, a special “Thank You” to the Willard Cantina for the great taco bar lunch!
Our next Second Saturday meeting should be on September 9th (location TBD), but before then we’ll be at the Sunflower Festival on the 26th of this month, with a Voter Registration/Information booth. Please be sure to visit us there, and if you would like to volunteer to help out in the booth please contact Millie Peifer. We can use all the help that we can get as we start to gear up for the crucial 2024 election!

In the last few months, the Torrance County commission has taken some fairly bold steps aimed at lifting our county and its people. Re-examining our regular budget allowed us to re-allocate monies more efficiently. Getting ARPA funds encumbered for desperately needed improvements to water, roads, buildings and more will go a long way towards making life better for everyone.
On August 16, Our US Representative, Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury will be here. She has asked specifically to meet with our commissioners to find out what we need to move this county forward. There are state and federal monies available, and her staff knows how to get that money directed to where it is needed. They are already working on getting us the money to deal with our solid waste/land fill problems. All we had to do was ASK.
As we all know, Torrance County is a poor county, but I believe we have fallen into a mentality of poverty, and we are not impoverished. But loss of hope, BELIEVING that we are so poor that we are just stuck in this rut is guaranteed to KEEP us stuck. WE ARE NOT TRAPPED. Our county has potentials that will secure our future and help is available to build a county which is productive and self-sustaining. We are not asking for handouts, just a hand up. And our state and federal legislators are holding out that hand.
The only thing constant in life is change. How we deal with those changes is where we Democrats can shine. Many would like to ignore change, but it is going to happen and they will simply be left behind. Some just want to fight every change as though they are tilting at windmills. Or—and this is what WE can do—we can shape the changes as they come. We are having some great meetings with interesting speakers and good sharing of ideas and plans to move forward. Absolutely everyone leaves with a smile on their face, energized and with real hope for our future.
