“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,

an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.President Joseph Biden

Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter  January 15, 2024

Good Morning Fellow Democrats:

Today is the third Monday in January. By law, this is the day that we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In a relatively rare twist of the calendar, it also happens to actually be Martin Luther King’s birthday. Had he lived, he would have turned 95 today. While it’s true that, to a large degree, we celebrate the man who was struck down in his prime by an assassin’s bullet, more than the man we celebrate the goals of the man. We celebrate his dream that our nation would someday be a place where people “will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Since King’s death 56 years ago America has made significant progress toward realizing that dream, but on this day, we must be mindful that we still have miles to go before achieving an America that has been “transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.”

56 years after King’s untimely death we still have racist legislators in several states attempting to gerrymander voting districts in attempts to minimize, and even eliminate, the voting power of racial minorities.

56 years after King’s assassination we still have discrimination against minorities in virtually every segment of society.

56 years after James Earl Ray’s bullet struck down King in Memphis, we have someone running for the highest office in the land claiming that people coming to the world’s bastion of freedom are “poisoning the blood” of our nation, not because of the “content of their character”, but rather because of the color of their skin, the place of their birth or the language that they speak.

Today, we have an obligation to continue Dr. King’s quest in pursuit of that dream. Today, we must resolve ourselves to fight each day against the supporters of racism, misogyny and xenophobia that permeate our society. We still have a long way to go, but every day that we work towards achieving that ultimate goal is a day well spent.
