“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,

an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept. President Joseph Biden

Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter   May 1, 2023

Happy May Day Fellow Democrats:

It looks like spring is upon us and we should be thankful for every beautiful day, especially those few when the wind isn’t blowing. I think there will be two in May and a couple of more in June.

This past week brought us an announcement by President Biden that he will seek a second term. He deserves it based on his record. The economy is strong – inflation is decreasing – the Inflation Reduction Act is working and the job market is strong. Of course, the President’s age will be front and center as an issue during the campaign. However remember that the President is fit and hasn’t experienced any major medical issues during his first term – unlike the putative Republican candidate, who became severely ill from Covid during his one-term Presidency; is obese and has the color of an overly ripe pumpkin. Oh yeah, he is 76 years old. Assuming the former President is the Republican nominee, I doubt that age will play out as a major issue in the election.

On a state-wide issue, the Democratic Party of NM has been holding elections for Congressional District representatives and issues to be supported by the party in the upcoming election cycle. The DPNM is strong and New Mexico will remain Blue for years to come. The Red party is in disarray, with poor to no leadership at a state-wide level and dissent at a national level. They continue to shoot themselves in the foot by opposing common sense gun reform policies (pun intended) and a totally absurd abortion policy. Their retroactive vision will further weaken the party which once espoused national pride and patriotism. It continues to head down the path of promoting anarchy – all to the benefit of Democrats.

It’s important to get the Biden-Harris ticket off to a strong start, so if you are able, make a donation to the cause. Five dollars from a multitude of individuals will add up quickly. Let’s show that our rural neighborhoods can be a force at a national level.

Locally, it is disheartening to see the out-of-state influence on the leaders of the Town of Edgewood promoting their anti-abortion agenda. Well over sixty percent of Americans are supportive of a woman’s right to choose and control over her body and future. The Edgewood council and mayor have chosen to act in defiance of state law and to waste tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money and employee time subverting the law and the view of a majority of the citizens of this state. They need to be held accountable. The right person, with standing to sue, will undoubtedly have a justifiable cause of action against the town and perhaps the individuals who chose to pass this patently illegal ordinance.

Thanks for your time reading this and please send me your thoughts. My email is [email protected]. Let me hear from you.

A Message from our Vice Chair

“All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.”

Last summer and early fall, a dedicated group of DPTC members decided to get busy and make some noise for every democrat that would be on our ballots. And we did it. We campaigned at multiple county events/parades. We got noticed by (and appreciated by) our statewide candidates and the state party.   We must not lose this momentum.

We will need to participate in EVERY community event this season, making our presence known and pulling in new people.  I am in contact with the Federation of Democratic Women to start a chapter here in Torrance County. The ‘format’ and legalities to start a chapter is the easy part. We need women who see the crises we are facing and believe, as I do, that the Democratic party is the best hope this country has if we are to survive the chaos of the last few years.

Americans have not been asked to pick up rifles and grenade launchers to defend democracy. But do not kid yourself, the United States is in a war for survival as a democratic republic. Every man, woman, and child will be affected by what is happening in our government, and ALL GOVERNMENT IS LOCAL. We need an army.

Anyone who is interested in helping out in any way, please contact me. My email is listed in the Blue Beacon. We need people who can help get flyers out, set up and run event booths, help with our parade floats, and on and on. There is something for everyone. And here is the neat thing about it all. Yes, it is ‘work’, but I can honestly say that I (and I think everyone else,) has had a great time doing this work. Even if you feel you don’t have a lot of time to help out, whatever time you can give makes a difference.  I am in harness and ready to pull this load. Is anybody willing to pull with me?
