Good morning fellow Democrats, Antifa members and passionate activists!
There is certainly no shortage of crazy things from the Trump administration to talk about this week, from his posting of racist memes characterizing former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama as jungle monkeys to the FBI raiding of the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center to seize ballots and other records from the election in 2020. But this week I think we really need to focus on issues closer to home.
At the roundhouse, HB9 passed both houses of the Legislature and was signed into law by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. Among other things, that legislation now makes it illegal for any local government within the state to contract with ICE for the detention of detainees. How this will impact the Torrance County Detention Center remains to be seen since HB9 doesn’t forbid Core Civic from contracting directly with ICE and Core Civic actually owns the detention center.
But I want to get even closer to home and discuss DPTC business. On Saturday we’ll be holding our ward meetings and County Pre-primary convention at the office starting at 11 AM, and we’d love for a large group to join us. By the time we’re done, and it shouldn’t take too long, we will hopefully have chosen four individuals, in addition to our four State Central Committee members, to serve as delegates to the DPNM State Pre-Primary Convention three weeks later in Ruidoso. This is a great opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the party from the inside, as delegates vote to put candidates for federal and state-wide positions on the ballot for the June primary election.
And, speaking of the June primary, at this point we still don’t have any brave souls who have stepped up to be candidates for any of the county-level positions that are up for election! We can’t win if we don’t have candidates on the ballot! Two County Commissioner positions are up (Districts 1 and 2) as well as Sheriff, Assessor and Probate Judge are in play, and the two Republican County Commissioner incumbents are term-limited and can’t run again this cycle. If anyone is interested in running, please contact me ASAP and the party will do everything it can to help you get elected!
STAND UP, PUSH BACK AND CONTINUE THE FIGHT!

TRUMP LIES ABOUT EVERYTHING!
Refute the Republican Rhetoric
By Bill Peifer
A week and a half ago the FBI, at Pam Bondi’s direction (presumably on orders from Trump) conducted a raid at the Fulton County, Georgia election office in Union City, GA. The FBI seized all physical ballots, ballot images, tabulator tapes, and the voter rolls of Fulton County from the 2020 United States presidential election with Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard in attendance for some unknown reason.
As we all know, Trump has been fixated for five years on his delusion that he actually won the 2020 election. Most of us can remember hearing the recording of Trump trying to coerce Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to find a way to fraudulently give him additional votes to overcome his 11,779-vote deficit. The exact words, which contributed to Trump’s second impeachment, were "What I want to do is this. I just want to find, uh, 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have, because we won the state." It’s safe to assume that Trump is hoping that his lackeys will either “create” 11,780 ballots for him or destroy that many ballots that were marked for Biden so that he can claim that he won Georgia in 2020 (which still wouldn’t be anywhere near enough to change the final results).
On Monday, a few days after that raid, Trump sat down with his former FBI director Dan Bongino for a podcast interview. The interview quickly turned to the FBI raid and Trump’s favorite subject: the supposed massive voter fraud that exists in his mind, but nowhere else. A few minutes into the interview the words that would later be replayed by every major network except FOX News rolled out of his mouth.
"The Republicans should say: 'We want to take over. We should take over the voting in at least 15 places.' The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting," Trump said. That’s not the lie for this week, although the whole idea is based on a lie. No, the lie came later in the week when he claimed “I never said that! I would never use the word ‘nationalize’!”
Of course, tens of millions of Americans have by now heard the clip and heard the exact words being uttered. He can’t possibly deny having suggested a federal takeover . . . no, actually a Republican party takeover . . . of our election system! And yet he still tries to deny it.

Looking for Democrats to run in 2026
With the 2025 non-partisan elections behind us, the DPTC is now looking at the 2026 Torrance County elections. These elections are partisan, but in the recent past there have only been Republicans on the ballot for the General Election since it’s been difficult to persuade Democrats to run in a county where it’s perceived that only Republicans can win. Because of this perception, there have been times when Democrats want to run, but feel that they have to change their party affiliation to “Republican” to get elected. In 2026 we’d like to change this perception, but we need brave Democrats to step up and “put their hats in the ring”. Here are the positions that will be up for election in 2026 along with the estimated annual salary:
County Commissioner District 1 – Pays $27,570.
County Commissioner District 2 – Pays $27,570.
Sheriff – Pays $72,164.
Assessor – Pays $70,031.
Probate Judge – Pays $24,180.
Magistrate Judge – Pays $79,537
All of the salaries shown are the current salaries which will likely go up slightly with a “cost of living” increase at the first of the year. The DPTC stands ready to assist you as much as possible, should you choose to step up and run for one of these positions! Contact Bill Peifer if you have any interest in running.
