“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,

an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.President Joseph Biden

Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter   June 19, 2023

Good morning!

I hope everyone is enjoying the Juneteenth National Independence Day. Many of us are just now getting used to having a national holiday in the middle of June, but this one is significant. It is the anniversary of the proclamation of freedom for enslaved people in the state of Texas. And no, it wasn’t the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln. It was issued by U.S. Army General Granger nearly two and one-half years later. It took that long for news of the freedom for all persons in America to get to Texas. Of course, that was over 100 years ago. Recent events in Texas seem to indicate that it is still decades behind the rest of the country in civil rights. That’s a story for a different time though.

READ THE INDICTMENT!!! That’s all you need to say to those still in denial about the former President’s lack of patriotism. There are 37 counts of FACT-BASED allegations. Each count is supported by testimony (by Republicans entwined with T%@#p’s organization) or documentation, leaving little doubt of the strength of the case against him. Make no doubt, these are felony charges associated with our national security. Whether this man retained and attempted to hide these documents to placate his insatiable ego or for some other nefarious purpose is not relevant. The facts indicate that he retained them for months after being requested to turn them over to the National Archives AND ON TOP OF THAT thereafter caused them to be moved around to avoid being caught with them AND ON TOP OF THAT even attempted to get his attorneys to lie about whether he had documents at all. This man can not be entrusted ever again to lead our country. He is a narcissistic traitor. Anyone in doubt only has to READ THE INDICTMENT.

We are living history and the future of our country is on the line.

Be Brave, Vote Blue! Stand Up! Push Back! Vote!

Celebrate Juneteenth

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States.

But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.
