Hello Fellow Democrats and Antifa Thinkers,
I am thrilled to report that we had an exceptionally well attended County Convention this past Saturday. The purpose of the Convention was to elect delegates to attend the State Convention to be held in Ruidoso in March. It was good to see some old members that we had not seen in a while and excited to have newcomers and to make new friends. We elected four delegates and along with the four serving on the Central Committee, there will be eight of us attending the State Convention. I want to give giant shout out to those of you that volunteered to fill the four spots, Torrance County will be well represented. Below is the list of delegates that will be attending. Ruidoso Here We Come!!!
Elected Delegates:
Morrow Hall
Andrew Homer
Augustine Montoya
Jacqueline Salazar
SCC Members:
Myra Oden chair@dptc-nm.org
Bill Peifer vicechair@dptc-nm.org
Millie Peifer secretary@dptc-nm.org (via Rural Caucus)
Ronnie Ray imronnieray@gmail.com (via Rural Caucus).
On another note, most of you are probably aware that the Immigrant Safety Act (House Bill 9) was passed this month and prohibits state and local governments from contracting with ICE to detain individuals for civil immigration violations, bans private land use for detention, and halts 287 agreements turning local police into immigration agents. This is a major loss of funding for Torrance County and the Core Civic facility in Estancia. I am told the contract is about 40% of the Torrance Couty Budget. Of course, our Republican County Commission is devastated as is the Town of Estancia. They have both known for some time now that this was a real possibility, and they have not been working toward finding a replacement for those funds. In hindsight, I am sure they wish they had done things differently. In my opinion, Torrance County needs to re-evaluate, diversify and start working on economic development to replace that 40% loss and to grow the budget. Had they been working on that all along, this loss would not be so devastating. Sadly, the County has been here before, this is not their first rodeo with this prison facility closing. It is time now for new leadership! Here is the thing, two of those Commission seats are up for election in November and the two Republicans that currently occupy those seats are termed out, meaning they cannot run in the November election. This is the perfect opportunity for Democrats to take over! How do we do that? We need candidates that understand economic development and are committed to making Torrance County a great place to live and work. If you are interested in running, the DPTC will be there to help with campaign fundraising and advertising. We are here to help, you are not alone. Call us, we want to help, we want to get behind you and get Democrats elected to the Torrance County Commission.
Lastly, I am proud to say that we have raised enough money to cover the costs of putting on the Denim & Diamonds Event! We have not, however, raised enough money to put funds in our pocketbook to do all of things we have promised to do. We need your help to get that accomplished. Please buy your tickets to attend TODAY, sign up to be a sponsor, we desperately need your support and want to see you get involved. We need everyone’s help to fight DJT and fascism. You cannot simply sit on the sidelines and hope this garbage will go away, YOU need to get active, NOW is the time! It will take all of us working together as a community to knock these crazy people out of our government and restore Democracy!
Stand Up! Push Back! Continue the Fight!

TRUMP LIES ABOUT EVERYTHING!
Refute the Republican Rhetoric
By Bill Peifer
On Friday, at about 3 PM when most people in Washington D.C. are hard at work at their jobs, Donald Trump took time out from his busy day of golf and napping through meetings to post a 340-word rant on his Untruth Social platform. Much of that rant focused on the Republican’s so-called SAVE Act, which they claim will solve the non-existent problem of “millions of non-citizens voting in our elections” by making it extremely difficult and expensive for many citizens, especially women, to vote. But our lie for this week actually comes at the tail end of this rant when he wrote “these Corrupt and Deranged Democrats, if they ever gain power, will not only be adding two States to our roster of 50, with all of the baggage thereto, but will also PACK THE COURT with a total of 21 Supreme Court Justices, THEIR DREAM, which they will submit easily and rapidly when they immediately move to terminate the Filibuster, probably in their first week, or sooner.”
While statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. have long been discussed as a possibility, and certainly would be helpful in keeping Democrats in the majority in both houses of Congress, that change has never been a top priority in the past and neither Hakeem Jefferies nor Chuck Schumer have indicated that it would be when Dems take back Congress with the 2026 mid-term elections.
And, while there has been support in the past for increasing the number of justices on the Supreme Court to 13, and once the number 15 was proposed, nobody is on record for supporting more than doubling the size of the court. 21 is simply NOT a number that anyone in Congress or the DNC has put forward.
And the filibuster is something that both parties typically like to talk about limiting or getting rid of when it’s an impediment to accomplishing what they want, but most Senate Democrats support a return to the “Talking Filibuster”, where a senator actually has to stand up and make a speech for hours on end, for instance, Senator Cory Booker’s record-setting filibuster of 25 hours and 5 minutes last spring, No, Chuck Schumer hasn’t proposed getting rid of the filibuster at all when he becomes Majority Leader next January. Not in “their first week”, and certainly not “sooner”, as if that was even possible.
