“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,
an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.” President Joseph Biden
| Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter February 5, 2024 | |
Good Morning Democrats:
If you ask almost anyone, Republican or Democrats, their biggest concern, the issue that most matters to them, you will almost assuredly hear one of two choices. It's either the economy or the border. I have always said that "kitchen table" issues win close Presidential elections. I listened to Chairman Powell of the Federal Reserve this evening on 60 Minutes and he confirmed that inflation continues to decline. It is now at 3% and while the Fed wasn't comfortable lowering interest rates in January, he believes that inflation will continue to move to the Fed's goal of 2% per annum. This doesn't mean that prices on non-commodity items will go down, but the American public is seeing prices for commodity items going down substantially. Gasoline, for example, is down over $1 per gallon over last year.
My point here is that the Biden administration's economic plan is working. This administration has taken the country from a pandemic that was economically devastating to an almost full recovery in a little over two years. And the MAGA followers of Inmate P01135809 are beside themselves without this issue to whine about.
They are left with the border. And we all know our immigration system needs an overhaul. And some in Congress, specifically the Senate, are trying to address it. However, MAGA Republicans want this issue in November. It's all they have. So what do the right-wing Inmate followers in the House of Representatives do? They have said that a reasonable bipartisan Senate bill is "dead on arrival" at the House. MAGA speaker Johnson will do everything in his power to keep the bill from passing the House. This without even reading the bill which was just printed out Sunday evening. It's a sweeping bipartisan border security deal that includes necessary financial aid for Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and humanitarian aid. It was opposed by the Inmate candidate for one reason. He doesn't want the border issue to be addressed prior to the election. He doesn't care that this bill would be the first significant action taken by Congress in over twenty years on immigration. It attempts to close loopholes that exist in the asylum process and provide the President authority to shut the border if attempted crossings are too high. If you will remember the Courts limited Presidential authority to do so after the Inmate attempted to do so during his administration.
You can't make this stuff up. The Republicans who beat their chests and yell "Close the Border" refuse to take the action that would authorize that very thing. Their own lead negotiator on this bill in the Senate called the bill's changes to asylum "dramatic" and predicts that it would discourage migrants from attempting to cross over if passed.
Remind your friends and colleagues of the Republican failure next time you hear about the troubles at the border.
The economy is strong - a bill on immigration is available for the taking - our health choices are on the line - STAND UP - PUSH BACK - VOTE!
See you on Saturday at the County Convention.
