Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

November 18, 2024

Good Morning Fellow Democrats:

Tomorrow will mark two weeks since Americans went to the polls and figuratively shot themselves in the foot by electing a man who has long been an advocate for a “unitary executive” . . . in other words, an absolute dictator . . . along with a House of Representatives and Senate that will do whatever he tells them to do. Trump already has an entrenched 6-3 majority of the Supreme Court ready to cede all authority to him, so the future of America, at least for the next two to four years, looks quite bleak. But there really IS a silver lining.

One of my favorite political quotes comes from Nelson Mandela, who said “I never lose. I either win or learn.” So now, those of us who did not win need to evaluate what we’ve learned. Going forward the whole country, including those who passively helped Trump by staying on the sidelines and those who supported him out of ignorance of what he stood for and what he would do, has the opportunity to learn. I anticipate that at some point over the next two years many good Americans will collectively say to themselves “My God! What have we done?” As “buyer’s remorse” begins to set in for the voting public it presents an opportunity for the Democratic Party.

I have faith that, two years from now, enough Americans will have come to their senses enough to flip the House of Representatives from “red” to “blue” and hopefully flip the Senate as well. When that happens, we will have the opportunity to impeach Trump for a 3rd time and possibly finally remove him, leaving us with JD Vance, who never had a thought of his own, as President and leader of the Republican Party. The vehicle for that happening is the Democratic Party.

The leadership of the party at all levels needs to be ready to embrace newcomers to political activity with open arms, regardless of where they stood on the candidates two weeks ago. The anticipated excesses of the incoming administration could be the greatest recruiting tool that the DPTC could ask for. Your county, ward and precinct officers stand ready to help turn Torrance County blue. Contact Dennis or myself to volunteer. And, for those who believe that we can’t possibly turn this county blue, I would remind them of another Nelson Mandela quote:

“It always seems impossible, until it is done.”

Stand Up! Push Back! Get Involved!

“There are moments when I’m deeply, deeply sad. And there are moments when, yes, even I feel desperation. We all do. But you have to own it. You have to accept it. You have to shed the tears, and then you have to wipe them and get up and fight some more.”

  • November 21 Public Hearing at 6:00pm, Edgewood Town Hall.

EMPAC will deliver the opposition letter below in-person to the Edgewood Commission on Nov 21 @ 6pm. It is important that each of you write a letter to explain ways you will be "harmed by this project" (use these words in your letter to help establish your standing). Deliver the letter by email, mail, or in-person (address below). Feel free to use any parts of our letter to personalize your own letter.

EMPAC has been in direct contact with the Edgewood Town Clerk and Town Manager to re-re-re-clarify the following (verbally per the Town Clerk and the Town Manager):

  • If you are a property owner that received a notice from Edgewood and your opposition letter is mailed, it must be notarized and received by no later than Nov 18.
  • If you did not receive a notice from Edgewood and your opposition letter is mailed, it must be received no later than Nov 18.
  • If your letter is hand delivered to the Clerk or P&Z Office, it must be received no later than Nov 18.
  • If you hand deliver your letter at the Nov 21 P&Z meeting (allowed) AND if you plan to make a statement, you will be sworn in and therefore your letter does not need to be notarized. However, it is very possible that anyone who did not receive a notice from Edgewood will not be allowed to speak and your letter may be disallowed if not notarized  (i.e. we recommend getting your letter notarized if possible).
  • Email your letter to the Edgewood Town Clerk clerk@edgewood-nm.gov demonstrating harm by Nov 18, notary not required. Ask for a REPLY email stating that it will be included in the public record.

Again, all of the above was provided to us verbally. We have found nothing in ordinance, law, Roberts Rules, etc., on the above and this reflects how Edgewood actively works to put up roadblocks to the public while enabling the Developer’s project.

Edgewood Mailing and Email Address:

Mr. Brad Hill

Edgewood Community Development Director

Planning and Zoning Commission

P.O. Box 3610

Edgewood, NM 87015

clerk@edgewood-nm.gov

It is always a good practice to submit in way to get a positive confirmation of receipt. If mailed, send return receipt requested or other methods of getting a receipt signature (ex. FedEx). If hand delivered, request a signature of receipt. If emailed, ask for a REPLY acknowledgment of receipt.

See you again next week at the Edgewood Planning and Zoning meeting on Nov 21 @ 6:00 when the P&Z will hopefully vote "NO" on the Campbell Ranch Minor Subdivision application.
