Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

Hello Fellow Democrats,

For the past several years, the DPTC has participated in the Old Timers’ Day festivities in Estancia by joining the parade and having an information booth in the park. We did so again on Saturday, and some details of what a great event it was are below, but this year was very different from the past few years. As Myra and I began walking the parade route, with Ronnie and Linda behind us in Ronnie’s truck, we were fully prepared to be the recipients of slurs, insults, and other anti-Democrat behavior, since that had been the case in previous years, but this year was very different.

Instead of the anticipated rudeness by the MAGA faithful, we were mostly greeted with politeness at worst, and often quite pleasantly and even supportively. This was different from what we had anticipated. Something had changed. Later, walking through the park to scout out possible food vendors, I didn’t see a single MAGA hat and only one pro-Trump t-shirt. At our booth we gave away dozens of backpacks to children headed back to school, registered a new voter and talked to quite a few people, none of whom expressed any animosity towards us. This change in attitude by those attending Old Timers’ was surprising. Something was different, but WHAT?

I believe that the shift in attitude can be summed up by four words that someone came off the sidewalk to tell Myra and myself during the parade. “He’s on the list!” were those four words. The MAGA faithful in Washington have dug themselves into a deep hole over the “Epstein Files”, and it’s affecting Trump’s standing among his supporters down to the local level. The “List” has gone from Pam Bondi’s desk to a declaration from her that it simply doesn’t exist. Trump himself has stated that information about his association with Jeffrey Epstein likely exists, claiming that it was manufactured by Obama, Hillary, Biden, Comey and others to smear him. The administration and Speaker Johnson are doing everything they can to keep anything related to Trump and Epstein hidden from public scrutiny. Even staunch MAGA supporters are beginning to smell a coverup.

Trump’s behavior over decades, including literally DOZENS of women accusing him of rape, sexual abuse and pedophilia when they were as young as 12 years old, set him up to make everything that one might imagine might be in those hurriedly hidden files very believable. He has a history of tying his accusers up in court for years until they just give up out of exhaustion and frustration, but this time he appears to be in a corner because of his position. If the information reaches the public and it’s bad, people will say “I knew it all along”. If it reaches the public but there’s nothing about Trump, people will say that he used his position to scrub anything about him out of the files. If the files get buried altogether, people will say that there’s a coverup in-process. No matter what happens, this is a “Lose-Lose-Lose” situation for Trump, and I believe that it’s already affecting the views of rank-and-file Republicans.

As Trump plummets in the polls, it’s even MORE important than ever for Democrats to go on the offensive. We can’t let Trump’s tariff “deals”, the Big Beautiful Bill (now the Big Ugly Lousy Law, or BULL) or anything else that Trump says or does distract from the scandal that can bring him down. We need to organize, demonstrate and educate.

STAND UP, PUSH BACK AND BE HEARD!

The "BLUE DOT CREW"

The Blue Dot Crew are Democrats who wear a little blue button! "A blue dot in a sea of red dots!" We, in Torrance County, can feel outnumbered and overwhelmed. We are a blue dot in a red county and will be heard. We will be at the three events this summer handing out blue dot buttons to any Democrat who wants one. They can then add their blue dot to the large Torrance County map. It will be our way to identify other Democrats when you feel alone.
