Hello Fellow Democrats,
By today’s standards it was a cool summer in Philadelphia, with high temperatures only in the 70s. Still, without air conditioning or electric fans, and the windows all closed tight to maintain secrecy, conditions inside the Pennsylvania State House were less than ideal. The Second Continental Congress had convened a year earlier to draft requests to King George III of England to recognize the rights of citizens in the 13 American colonies, but as time went on, the idea of separating completely from England had begun to gather more support. With independence on the minds of many of the delegates, a Committee of Five was appointed in June of 1776 to draft a document that would declare the independence of the colonies. Members of that Committee of Five delegated the task of penning that document to one of its members . . . Thomas Jefferson, who would later become the first member of the Democratic Party to be elected President.
Although the document largely consists of a list of grievances the colonists had, one phrase within it stands out. Jefferson’s declaration of basic human rights that is quoted above this article states that all citizens have the rights of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”. Today, 247 years later, we find those basic rights under attack from an element within our society, like at no other time in our country’s history. Six right-wing extremists on the Supreme Court have struck down Roe v. Wade, placing the “rights” of a fetus above the right of “Life” for a woman. They have restricted citizens’ “Liberty” to better themselves by allowing the perpetuation of a disadvantaged youth, rejecting Affirmative Action. And they’ve taken the “Pursuit of Happiness” away from millions of Americans through those, and other, ultra-conservative decisions.
The Democratic Party still stands for those basic rights and will continue to do so. But we need your help. A handful of hard-working volunteers can’t do it alone. We need for everyone to “Stand Up; Push Back; Vote!”, but we also need your efforts as volunteers, and we need your financial support as well. PLEASE! Get involved! Attend our party’s meetings! Volunteer to help! And commit to donating to the party as we continue to work to keep Jefferson’s ideals alive.
