“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,

an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.President Joseph Biden

Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter  January 29, 2024

Good Morning Democrats:

The single biggest issue that Democrats and Republicans agree must be addressed in the coming year is the border. We all agree that something must be done, although we tend to disagree on just what should be done, and why. Republicans wish to completely close the border off, falsely claiming that immigrants will take jobs away from citizens, and that all of the potential immigrants are bad people. Democrats recognize that our country currently has two unfilled jobs for every jobseeker and that the vast majority of those at the border are honest, hard-working people, fleeing a brutal dictatorship in Venezuela and are just looking for a better life. So, we are at odds in that Democrats want to increase legal immigration and Republicans want to keep these people out completely.

The Biden Administration has been attempting to work out a compromise with Republicans in Congress that will allow asylum-seekers into our country with a possible eventual path to citizenship, and it seems that such a deal had finally been reached. The problem right now is that the disgraced and indicted former President, who is now the presumptive candidate for President in 2024, wants Republicans in Congress to block the bipartisan effort to solve the border problem. Why? For no reason other than that he wants to use the border issue as a campaign wedge issue this year, blaming Biden for the lack of security at the border. He wants the chaos at the U.S./Mexican border to continue in an effort to make Biden look bad. Trump’s insistence that this problem must NOT be fixed by the current Administration is so that he can use it as a campaign issue. This borders on treason.

Of course, Trump is no stranger to things that border on treason. In my opinion, his encouragement and support of a mob that sought to overthrow the elected government in 2021 is a clear indication that he cares only for himself, and not at all for the country, which should disqualify him from office, but that’s for the courts to decide.

Here’s the truth on the border issue: Trump broke it. His policy was to leave millions of people in the deserts of northern Mexico to die of hunger, thirst and exposure. Biden has been trying to implement a humanitarian fix, but Republicans in the House of Representatives refuse to provide funding for such an effort. If it’s not fixed before the Presidential campaigns get into full swing, Trump and the Republican Party will do their best to blame it all on Biden. And now Trump has doubled down by demanding that Republicans in Congress halt any efforts to fix the problem, all for his own ego and to benefit his campaign.

The American people need to send a clear message to Republicans in Congress and the New Mexico Roundhouse. GOP lawmakers at all levels need to stop their political stunts and start doing the jobs they were elected to do. They need to work on things that benefit the country and New Mexico and stop working to burn it all down.
