Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter  March 18, 2024

Good Morning Fellow Democrats:

The general perception is that Torrance County is a deeply red county. The general perception is that Republicans have a firm grip on the county when it comes to elections. That’s the perception held by many people out here in our rural home, and the perception is so strong that a lifelong Democrat who wanted to run for office recently changed their political affiliation from Democrat to Republican, not because of any change in ideology, but rather because of the perception that there are just too many Republicans in Torrance County for a Democrat to win an election here.

That’s the perception, but perceptions aren’t always reality. The truth is that, while Republicans do have a plurality when it comes to voter registration, they are not in the majority. For those who don’t understand the difference between a plurality and a majority, a Republican plurality simply means that there are more Republicans than any other single group, but they don’t have fully half of the sum of all the other groups combined. More than 21% of the registered voters in Torrance County identify as “No Party”, “Independent” or “Declined to State”. Those are the voters who will decide any given election. If they vote with the Republicans, Republicans win. But if they can be persuaded to vote with our party, Democrats will win Torrance County by enough of a margin to turn our county blue again, and maybe Democrats would be able to get the county moving forward again, instead of backwards.

But persuading those “Independents” to vote for progress isn’t the only way that we can win. Typically, voter turnout for Republicans is about 43% and significantly higher for Democrats. If Democrats get out to vote, and we get our turnout percentage up to about 75%, Democratic candidates will win.

So, we have two tasks to work on in 2024. We need to see to it that our people vote. If we can mount a successful “Get Out The Vote” effort this year we win. If we can make those who are unaffiliated with either party understand the truth that the Democratic Party is really the party of the people, by the people and for the people, we also win. If we can do both, we send a loud and clear message to the GOP that Torrance County is no longer a red county.

Stand Up! Push Back! Vote!
