“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,

an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.President Joseph Biden

Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter  June 5, 2023

Good Morning Fellow Democrats:

On Saturday, President Biden signed the bill that would suspend the country’s debt limit for two years. The bill was a compromise, passed by both houses of Congress last week, that didn’t give either Republicans or Democrats everything that either side wanted but was probably the best that could be done given the polarized climate in Washington. Republicans wanted massive cuts that would have been disastrous for low and middle-income Americans, and the compromised bill removed most of those cuts, but not all. The single biggest harmful cut calls for work requirements for low-income recipients of SNAP and other assistance programs for the poor.

At first glance, requiring able-bodied recipients to have a job in order to receive benefits may seem like a good thing. However, the bill doesn’t allow for two significant exceptions that may affect residents of Torrance County. First, it assumes that there are jobs available locally for recipients to fill. In many areas of the country, including New Mexico, the job openings often are just not there. While there may be jobs available in Albuquerque, that doesn't mean that someone in our county would have a way to get back and forth to work an hour away. Public transportation in rural areas is virtually non-existent. Also, for single parents with small children, many of the jobs that might become available as the economy improves will pay less than the cost of childcare, which creates a disincentive to working.

The bottom line is that there will be low-income families here in Torrance County that will lose precious assistance for feeding their families. We can expect increased reliance on the East Mountain Food Pantry, Bethel Community Storehouse and other alternatives that hurting families will be turning to. We need to support those charitable organizations to the best of our ability until Congress becomes willing to reinstate the assistance that the debt ceiling bill has taken away.

“If you help elect more gay people, that gives a green light to all who feel disenfranchised, a green light to move forward.”— Harvey Milk

As Democrats we celebrate Pride Month.

Taking place every June, Pride Month celebrates the self-affirmation, dignity, equality and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The month-long celebration was given the name "Pride" to encourage those feelings as the community comes together to celebrate and bolster LGBTQ+ rights movements.

How It Started

Before Pride become a celebration, it started out as a protest. June 28, 1969 marks the start of the Stonewall riots in which the queer community responded to a police raid that began at the Stonewall Inn, a bar located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, that served as a safe haven for the city’s gay, lesbian and transgender community.

At the time, homosexual acts were deemed illegal in almost every state, and bars and restaurants faced getting shut down for having gay employees or serving gay patrons. While police had raided gay establishments before, on that particular night, members of the LGBTQ community decided to fight back, sparking an uprising that would launch a new era of resistance that would later turn to celebration.

Why June?

On June 28, 1970, on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the first Pride parade set off from Stonewall. Gay activists in New York organized the Christopher Street Liberation March to cap off the city’s first Pride Week. Several hundred people started marching up 6th Avenue, toward Central Park. The parade eventually stretched 15 city blocks and encompassed thousands of supporters.

Activists in other cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Chicago, organized Pride celebrations that same year, celebrations that would continue through today.

What do all the different Pride flags mean?

Here is a great article about all the pride flags.
