“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,

an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.President Joseph Biden

Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter  February 19, 2024

Good Morning Democrats:

It's President's Day and the third day of a long weekend for many of us. The weather is unseasonably warm and conducive to some fun outdoor time, so enjoy.

President's Day which falls in February, the birth month of both our first and sixteenth Presidents, commemorates our country's 46 chief executives. It is a Federal holiday, and was originally celebrated as "Washington's Birthday", at least when I was a youngster. As I recall George Washington's Birthday is February 22nd and Abraham Lincoln's is February 12th. Since Lincoln was (and still is) my favorite President, the dates always had special meaning for me.

It's also a reminder for us that we have a Presidential election this year. I know its early and hard to generate excitement in these days of constant negative coverage by the cable news industry and Faux News, but it is important to remember the near coup of January 6, 2021 and the near collapse of our democracy. We can't afford another Orange One administration. When your friends talk to you about the border crisis, remind them that it was Republicans in Congress who killed the bill which would have allowed President Biden to address the issue meaningfully. They followed Orange's dictates before the bill was even printed. Also, remind them that President Biden led the country through a pandemic and the impact it had on our economy. The economy has bounced back under his leadership and the signs are encouraging that inflation will continue to drop over the coming year.

Our Senator Heinrich is going to need our help this year more than ever. The Republican Party has a candidate, who even though has little contact with NM over the past years, has name recognition. This will be a challenge and our party must step up to maintain the good work that Senator Heinrich continues to do for the state.

On a final note, we held our County Convention this past Saturday. Turnout was disappointingly low, but I suspect that was because of weather related issues as much as anything. We were able to elect our delegates to the State Convention so it was successful from that standpoint. I'm open to ideas on how we can increase participation at our meetings. I, once again, thank those in attendance. I call them the Intrepids.

Hope to see you next month. Stand Up! Push Back! Vote! Get Involved!
