Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter   October 2, 2023

Good Morning Fellow Democrats!

Fall is upon us. The weather is cooler, and the leaves are beginning to change colors. And it’s the time for exciting politics. This year our elections are local with school board positions, mayoral positions and city and town council or trustee positions up for grabs. We know all politics are local and that the Republicans have been engaged in a concerted effort to control local governments and school boards across the nation. The impact in many areas has been catastrophic with school boards banning books, intruding into how and what children are taught, and generally, trying to ignore or rewrite history. We see some of it in our local communities and we certainly see the bent of a couple of our local municipal governments. Please see below the candidates for the local positions here in Torrance County. Please do your homework on the candidates and know who you are voting for. We must not let MAGA ideologies take additional control of our government and schools in our county.

It's an exciting time for national politics as well. I don’t know how many of you watched the latest Republican debate – or clown show – but it was entertaining for a while. It appears that a few of them are pulling out the knives, but it is amazing to me that so many refuse to attack the former President. Maybe they truly are all running for a VP slot. Anyhow it is easy to see why the Republicans are so dysfunctional based on these folks being their best candidates for the Presidency.

Speaking of the former President, the damages portion of his companies' civil fraud trial in Manhattan begins today. The judge has already determined as a matter of law that fraud was committed by the Trump family. In order to establish the tort of fraud, the finder of fact -in this case, the judge – must find that the tortfeasor (Trump organization) acted with intent to defraud the lenders that were involved. Judge Engeron has made that finding, so to be clear, the Trump organization and presumably its officers and directors, i.e. the Trump family, intended to defraud the banks by inflating its worth to obtain financing. The trial will determine the amount of money the Trump organization will have to pay for compensatory damages, fines, fees, and presumably some degree of exemplary (punitive) damages for the intentional tort of fraud. The bottom line is the court has found that the former President is a fraud. Surprise!!!

Have a great week watching the show.
