Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter   May 8, 2023

Good Morning Fellow Democrats:

The weather is perking up and Torrance County is starting to green up for Spring. I hope everyone can get outside and enjoy this great time of year in our county.

There is a movement beginning in the county to expand the county commission from three members to five members. The Democratic Party of Torrance County supports this effort. The DPTC believes that the broader representation for diverse areas of the county will provide a voice for residents who often feel forgotten by our local governments. We are committed to ensuring that at least one of those seats will be dedicated to the land grant communities which rightfully feel they get lip service but little action from local government. Be on the watch for the petition which will soon be circulating demanding an increase in the number of commissioners.

Nationally, the trial of five members of the Proud Boy organization finally came to a conclusion with all five being convicted of major crimes. Four of the defendants were convicted of seditious conspiracy and all five were convicted of obstruction of Congress and destruction of evidence. Each charge carries a possible sentence of 20 years of incarceration. Together with the previous convictions of members of the Oath Keepers, the Department of Justice can consider the prosecutions an absolute success. In these days of politicization it is comforting to know that DOJ diligently performed their duties and will jail the leaders of the January 6 insurrection.

Seditious conspiracy is defined in the US Code as “two or more persons … conspiring to overthrow, put down, or to destroy the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, ….contrary to the authority thereof…”. The actions of the defendants, which we all saw with our own eyes, certainly meet these elements. I personally believe the acts of many others could be prosecuted for sedition, including the former President and his minions. Let’s see how that plays out.

We would like to see everyone at our general meeting on May 13th at our party office at the Route 66 Shopping Center in Moriarty. Donuts for All!!! See you there.
