“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,
an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.” President Joseph Biden
| Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter June 26, 2023 | |
Hello Fellow Democrats:
Just a reminder about our July 15th general membership meeting which will be held at the Schaffer Hotel in Mountainair. We are excited to have Juan Sanchez III, who serves as the Deputy Campaign Manager for Senator Martin Heinrich, as our featured speaker. Born in Belen, Juan largely grew up on his family’s ranch in Mountainair, which goes back to 1880. Juan has close ties to our area. Come out and hear him speak. We also will have a local guest speaker to talk about the goings on of one of the communities in Torrance County.
Changing the topic to economic development news, we all must be happy about our state’s economy. New Mexico has seen steady and stable economic growth due to the programs instituted at the national and state level by the Biden and Lujan Grisham administrations. The American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act are having huge impacts here at home.
To quote from the DPNM’s recent press release, “President Biden’s “Invest in America” agenda has delivered for New Mexico:
-
$3 billion in public infrastructure investment directed to New Mexico including $1.3 billion for transportation infrastructure like roads and public transit and $900 million for clean water infrastructure.
-
A 3.5% unemployment rate with 80,000 new jobs created in New Mexico.
-
164,000 New Mexico households have received affordable, high-speed internet through the Affordable Connectivity Program since President Biden took office.
-
·323,900 New Mexico seniors and other Medicare Part D beneficiaries will save on prescription drug costs because of President Biden’s $2,000 yearly cap on out-of-pocket prescription drug costs, a $35 monthly cap per insulin prescription, and free vaccines.”
Of course, much credit goes to Governor Lujan Grisham’s forward thinking for New Mexico as well. We’ve seen tremendous growth in investment in our communities state-wide. We did the right thing re-electing the Governor and now we must work hard to continue President Biden’s agenda and “finish the job”. It’s not too soon to roll up our sleeves and get the information out there to the voters.

"June PRIDE month is about respecting and recognizing every person's worth. Whether it is you, a child, a relative or a friend who is LGBTQA+, please remember to support and create a safe space for that person and the children to come yet in the future.
There is no space for bullying, or violence, or denial of health care. I am proud to live in New Mexico where we recognize all."

Those who oppose LGBTQ+ rights are particularly opposed to the idea of gay and lesbian couples marrying, and especially opposed to allowing them to raise children. Their thinking, if you can call it that, is that a homosexual couple raising children will cause those children to become gay, as if any sexual orientation other than their own is a communicable disease. Homosexual parents no more influence a child’s sexual orientation than did the efforts of the mother of a gay friend of ours to “pray away the gay”. I am personally proof of the fact that being raised by gays does not alter a child’s sexual orientation. You see, I was largely raised by My Two Dads.
My biological parents divorced when my father came out as gay in the 1960s. Although I lived with my mother for a time, most of my upbringing was left to my gay father and his partner, my “other dad”, Allan. They did see to it that I had exposure to “straight” female influences by sending me, for a time, to an all-girls’ school where I was taught, among other things, to be a lady, but my home life taught me far more about being a person.
My Two Dads and I regularly went out to dinner where we would often enjoy the social company of other couples . . . some straight but usually couples of gay men and lesbian women. I learned a very basic fact of life. Good people are good people. PERIOD! Their lifestyles DID influence me, but not in the way that the anti-LGBTQ+ people would think. Instead of shaping me to be gay it induced me to be not just tolerant and accepting of their lifestyle, but rather to be appreciative of it. I learned to love people for who they are, rather than who they chose to love. I learned that people are all really the same, regardless of their skin color, religion or sexuality. And no, I did not grow up to be a lesbian. I grew up to be a good wife, a good mother and most importantly, a good person, all thanks to My Two Dads!
