Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter   February 12, 2024

Good Morning Everyone:

I hope this finds you all well and keeping warm. As you know the weather didn’t cooperate on Saturday for our County Convention. We have rescheduled in the same venue this coming Saturday at the same time. That is the East Torrance Soil & Water building in Estancia, west of the Fairgrounds, at 11 a.m. We will be giving away two $50 Gift Certificates to Moriarty Foods! Come and maybe win some free food!

It was an interesting week in both state and national politics. On the state side, the Legislative 30-day session is winding down with one week to go. It has so far been an unproductive session from my point of view even though there have been nearly 800 bills and memorials introduced. HB 171, the School Graduation Amendments has been signed into law. It updates graduation requirements for high school students. It appears HB 252, the tax omnibus bill, will move forward, although it is unclear if the Governor will sign it.

It looks like the Paid Family and Medical Leave Act is hanging on by a thread. It has passed the Senate and moves to the House this week.

There hasn’t been much movement on the Governor’s crime reduction requests or gun legislation. The seven-day waiting period for gun purchases legislation seems to have the best chance to move to the Governor’s desk. We’ll see this week if anything else gets done. As usual, the opposition party, including Representative Lord, is resistant to any commonsense legislation on guns.

On a national level, the Special Counsel’s report on President Biden’s retention of classified documents was a knee-capper. While it cleared the President of criminal intent and therefore no criminal charges, it contained rationale for the decision that the pundits from both sides are screaming about.  Essentially it reported that the President is elderly – he is – and forgetful – who isn’t?  Personally, I think the President must own his age and capitalize on his experience. We all slow down as we age, but we also have garnered much savviness so we don’t have to learn as we go and which we can put to use easily. I met the President a couple of years ago when he was in Albuquerque. I can tell you there wasn’t a problem with his mental acuity then, and I can tell you he has had one of the most successful three year runs as President in American history. There is no one that I would rather have leading the country with the turmoil in the Middle East, Ukraine and elsewhere than Joe Biden. Certainly the Republicans have no alternative. Remind your friends of that.

Have a great week! See you on Saturday! Stand Up – Push Back – Vote – Get Involved
