“For all its imperfections, America is still the beacon to the world,

an ideal to be realized, a promise to be kept.President Joseph Biden

Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter  March 11, 2024

Good Morning Fellow Democrats:

I think the President answered the age question unmistakably during the State of the Union Address, don't you? He was powerful, on point, and appropriately responsive to the crude behavior that is epidemic amongst the MAGA right. We have our candidate. We have to roll up our sleeves and go to work for the Biden/Harris ticket. Our democracy depends on it.

Several of us attended the virtual State Democratic Pre-Primary Convention on Saturday. It was held virtually and there was a lot of good and fair debate on many issues, including some of the proposed planks of our state platform. The final platform will be approved by vote of the delegates after the convention, but the proposed platform has some propositions that hit home for us in Torrance County.

 Specifically, the Agriculture plank states:

  • "Water is Life. We support equitable local and sustainable New Mexico farming and ranching, fair water access emphasizing agriculture that feeds New Mexicans, water conservation efforts, and regenerative soil practices. We must increase access to fresh and nutritious foods in all communities, under the direction of impacted communities."
  •  And the Water plank reads: "Democrats must act now to secure our water future. We must support equitable, evidence-based, water planning, management, and stewardship. New Mexico will equitably and effectively adapt to climate change and best sustain what we value: our diverse cultures, our people and economy, food production, and riverine and riparian ecosystems."
  • The Energy plank states: "Democrats support the use of renewable energy and will train the workforce, create jobs, and support small businesses in a just transition to a renewable energy infrastructure. We will position New Mexico as a key global hub for technology, manufacturing, and construction to join and accelerate the clean-energy transition as a means to protect air, land, and water, and do everything in our power to avoid climate catastrophe. We will engage community members in decision making through meaningful consultation and full participation in environmental-justice planning."

As you can see, the state platform reflects what I believe the local values of our community require. I'm very happy with the proposed platform and invite you to read the full proposal at the Democratic Party of NM website.

We nominated our Representative candidates, including Melanie Stansbury, who represents Torrance County and Martin Heinrich as our Senatorial candidate. They all gave very inspiring acceptance speeches full of hope and initiatives that will serve us well.

We left the convention fired up and hope that energy carries forward to the upcoming elections.

Stand Up! Push Back! Vote! Get Involved!

A Special Note from A Precinct Chair

My fellow Democrats,

We need to find more courage in ourselves.

Last fall, the county party planned to have a float in the Pinto Bean Fiesta, but the plan was scrapped after Gov. Lujan Grisham signed firearm regulation. It was thought there might be backlash. This past Saturday, the state party convention was held – on Zoom. The traditional reunion meeting of Democrats (and old friends) from across the state was not held as a live event. Apparently party leaders were afraid of MAGA Republicans causing violence. And now, a good Democrat is running for county clerk here – on the Republican ticket. I’m told she changed parties to run because “only Republicans can win in Torrance County.”

This is not acceptable. We cannot be cowed by the MAGA crowd.

Donald Trump is a loser. That is the nicest thing I can say about him. He trades in hate, fear and untruth. Many Republicans seem to be under a mass hallucination or trance, but that won’t always be the case. Many of our fellow citizens will be heartily sorry they followed this disgusting person. Hate, fear and untruth cannot last.

That’s not to say that the Desolation of Trump will be ended soon. We could lose our country in the meantime. The GOP is little more than a clown car at this point. If they can’t dictate, they won’t govern. We MUST stop them.

The Democratic Party offers an escape from Trump and his malarkey. The Democratic Party offers good government and continues to support our democratic tradition. The Republican Party seems ready and willing to replace the first three words of the Constitution . . . “We, the People” . . . with “He, the Trump.” We can’t let them do it. We must be strong and proclaim our pride in the Democratic Party. We have had enough of Donald Trump!

Candidate Obama asked if we were “fired up and ready to go.” We need to get that way right now!

From the Treasurer

Some of you may have noticed a problem with the “Donations” page of our website over the past few weeks. Our hosting platform provider, Act Blue, made a change that impacted us directly. As a result of that change, the Donations page was down for about a week and the entire Act Blue interface needed to be rebuilt, resulting in the loss of pre-existing recurring donation commitments. Now that the platform has been rebuilt, those who had recurring donations set up will need to set them up again. We apologize on Act Blue’s behalf for any inconvenience.

Thanks to everyone who donates! These donations are critically important for our party. They help to maintain our presence in this predominantly red county with our office, our participation at community events and the expenses of our meetings. Thanks again for your continued financial support.
