Good Morning Fellow Democrats:
I’m still feeling shell-shocked by the election at the national level, but like it or not, we have to move on and keep fighting. Our country and our democracy have persevered through many challenges in our history, and I doubt that we will allow a totalitarian to run amok. The threats, veiled in sophomoric name calling, as well as directly to his political opponents or anyone else who opposes his views of the world we live in, seem reminiscent to the years of the 1940’s before, during, and after WW II, when the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was in full swing investigating alleged disloyalty and rebel activities among those suspected of “Communist” ties. As we have read and studied, these “investigations” were associated with McCarthyism, the attempt of Senator Joseph McCarthy to purge our country of contrarian views of the purpose of government. Scary times in our country’s history and perhaps something we must combat in the coming years. I’m sure many if not all of you have seen and heard the labeling of progressives as communists or socialists. I know I have.
In case this intro may be misconstrued, I, and my family, are the definition of capitalists. We have owned and operated multiple businesses, including restaurants, construction companies, motels, farms and ranches in New Mexico for over a century. We have employed hundreds of New Mexicans during those years. We have contributed much to the communities and schools in the state. That being said, I also recognize the hypocrisy of those who fail to recognize that one of the functions of government is not only to lift-up and promote industry, sometimes with subsidies and loans, but also to preserve the quality of life of our citizens. A reminder to us all is that the two industries that receive the greatest amount of assistance in terms of subsidies are oil and gas and agriculture. Both instrumental to our New Mexico economy. Without this help, the prices of our fuel and food products would greatly exceed what we are currently paying. In our state, ag and energy are absolutely essential both from an employment standpoint and a tax base. Is support for these industries socialism? Certainly, to a degree. However, I doubt if the incoming administration will alter these subsidies, nor do I think it should. I believe that at a federal level, the government has an obligation to support and aid industries that are vital to our way of life. And not just industries, my friends, but also individuals. That’s why we have agencies like FEMA and programs like SNAP. Because there are some needs that are bigger than local or state government. If the fires and flooding of the past decade don’t convince you of that, what will? Could the local governments of Ruidoso, Las Vegas, Mora or the state government of New Mexico bear the burden of these catastrophes? I think not. Could these agencies stand improvement? Of course. Hopefully that will be the goal of those coming to power, just as they were during the Biden administration.
My point is that the federal government is instrumental in our daily lives. Has it become inflated? Most assuredly. But it is more than just the military or big industry. Federal assistance is necessary at local levels as well. I doubt that most voters who cast their vote in favor of the President-elect want or will tolerate the end of programs that provide assistance at the local level any more than they want the end of subsidies to big energy or big agriculture. We’ll see how that works out with Project 2025.
FIGHT ON! STAND UP! PUSH BACK!

“There are moments when I’m deeply, deeply sad. And there are moments when, yes, even I feel desperation. We all do. But you have to own it. You have to accept it. You have to shed the tears, and then you have to wipe them and get up and fight some more.”
Justice Sonia Sotomayor

In Memory of
Fred Harris
November 13, 1930 – November 23, 2024
The Democratic Party mourns the loss of one of our greatest giants with the passing of Fred Harris. Democrats everywhere will remember Fred for his unparalleled integrity and as a pioneer for instituting core progressive values of equity and opportunity for prosperity as core tenets of our party.
Fred had many roles throughout his legendary career including Democratic National Committee Chair, US Senator, presidential candidate, scholar, mentor, and so much more. He was a delegate to 14 Democratic National Conventions, including 2024 in Chicago. After serving as US Senator from Oklahoma and DNC Chair, Fred made New Mexico his home where he would become one of the most prominent figures in our party for decades.
As a professor of political science at the University of New Mexico, Fred established an internship program that mentored dozens of young New Mexicans, molding them into future leaders in government and our party. Among his many accolades was a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Democratic Party of New Mexico at the recent 2024 Rising Star Gala in September. Going forward, the Democratic Party of New Mexico will name its annual Lifetime Achievement Award in his honor.
The Democratic Party of New Mexico’s thoughts are with his wife, past DPNM Chair Marg Elliston, the rest of his family, and his many friends. Fred Harris’ memory will inspire New Mexico Democrats to help others whenever we can and continue fighting for a more inclusive and prosperous future for all.

Campbell Ranch Update
by Cormac Dodd of The Santa Fe New Mexican
The landowner behind the long-planned Campbell Ranch residential project in Edgewood wants to get the project started, albeit in a more piecemeal fashion.
This prompted a sometimes raucous four-hour meeting Thursday night of the Edgewood Planning and Zoning Committee. More than 100 people attended, with some watching in the hallway due to overflow.
Campbell Ranch’s plans included two golf courses and 4,000 homes in 2002, when the project secured master development plan approval. But dirt has not moved on the property since then.
