Good morning, Democrats!
Today, being the third Monday in January, we celebrate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Had Dr. King lived, he would have turned 96 last Wednesday. King had a dream that his “four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” He spent his entire adult life pursuing that dream, not just for his children, but for every child who has ever been bullied or oppressed in any way because of the color of their skin, their religion, their sexual orientation, or any other artificial descriptor.
On this same day we observe, without celebration, the inauguration of a man who, in many ways, embodies almost everything that Dr. King stood against. Donald J. Trump has, in the past, systematically refused to rent properties to people of color. He has insulted the immigrant community calling them rapists and murderers and threatens to deport millions of hard-working immigrants. He has mocked and disparaged the handicapped, been a confirmed enemy of the LGBTQA+ community and only uses veterans as props while privately denigrating them. Trump is no friend of working people and will only work to make himself and his rich friends even richer.
Yes, today has two distinct facets. On one hand we honor the work of one great American, while on the other hand we can be dismayed and disappointed in the fact that so many misguided Americans voted to return Donald Trump to the White House instead of sending him to live out the rest of his miserable life in prison. Yes, our disappointment runs deep, but in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
