Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

March 17, 2025

Hello fellow Democrats,

This is my first letter as your new chairwoman. I came to the meeting two Saturdays ago knowing there was some kind of conspiracy going on to talk me into accepting the nomination. I did not take it seriously and did not expect to leave the meeting as chairwoman, but here I am! It appears to be my time to serve, and I hope I can do the job justice. I have pretty big shoes to fill as Dennis Wallin did a great job, and I truly appreciate his time and his work. I am grateful Millie and Bill are here to prop me up and keep me pointed in the right direction. These two have been a God send for this organization and with their help and your participation, I hope the Democratic Party of Torrance County will be well represented.

I know all of you are just as concerned as I am about the direction the Trump Regime is taking our country. (That’s what it is: a regime, not simply a term in office.) His actions are shocking and overwhelming and coming in rapid fire. It is difficult to keep up with it all, which is exactly what he wants! He wants to overwhelm us, to make us angry, to make us sad, to make us simply lie down and give up. That would be the easy thing to do, block it all out and go about our daily lives. But we cannot allow that to happen – we must stand up and push back! I listen to Rachel Maddow on MSNBC consistently. She reports on many different Democratic actions taking place across the country. Her favorite thing to say is, “Push back looks very different across the US.” I encourage you, I encourage this group to figure out what our pushback is going to be. We cannot simply hope for the best or we may very well end up living in an Autocracy with Donald Trump as dictator and that, my friends, scares the living hell of me!

What actions can we, in Torrance County, do to help preserve Democracy? What can you do personally to help preserve Democracy? I think we start by bringing a likeminded friend, family member or neighbor to these meetings, offer to pick them up and bring them with you. We need to get more people involved; some folks may just need a gentle nudge. Secondly, you can help this organization by making a monthly donation of any amount. You can do that at the bottom of this newsletter, it is quick and it’s easy. There are a number of weekly demonstrations going on in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. I would like to see us attend some of these as a group. I am willing to work on getting ridesharing organized and schedule a session for sign making. Lastly, I want to hear from you about your ideas for peaceful push back.

My email is myra@UCFarmHomeRealty. The time is NOW for peaceful action!

Stand Up! Push Back! Continue the Fight!

Police or ICE are at my home!

How to reduce risk to yourself

Stay calm and keep the door closed. Opening the door does not give them permission to come inside, but it is safer to speak to ICE through the door.

Your rights

· You have the right to remain silent, even if officer has a warrant.

· You do not have to let police or immigration agents into your home unless they have certain kinds of warrants.

If police have an arrest warrant, they are legally allowed to enter the home of the person on the warrant if they believe that person is inside. But a warrant of removal/deportation (Form I-205) does not allow officers to enter a home without consent.

What to do when the police or ICE arrive

·   Ask if they are immigration agents and what they are there for.

·   Ask the agent or officer to show you a badge or identification through the window or peephole.

·   Ask if they have a warrant signed by a judge. If they say they do, ask them to slide it under the door or hold it up to a window so you can inspect it.

·   Don’t lie or produce any false documents. Don’t sign anything without speaking with a lawyer first.

·   Do not open your door unless ICE shows you a judicial search or arrest warrant naming a person in your residence and/or areas to be searched at your address. If they don’t produce a warrant, keep the door closed. State: “I do not consent to your entry.”

·   If agents force their way in, do not resist. If you wish to exercise your rights, state: “I do not consent to your entry or to your search of these premises. I am exercising my right to remain silent. I wish to speak with a lawyer as soon as possible.”

·   If you are on probation with a search condition, law enforcement is allowed to enter your home.
