Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

March 3, 2025

Good morning, Fellow Democrats!

I hope this finds you well and raring to go to continue our resistance to the craziness that has pervaded the White House and Congress. I realize sometimes its frustrating and maybe discouraging to be a Democrat in an area like Torrance County, where conservatism has been replaced by right wing radicalism, but we must continue to push back to protect the values that have served our nation for 250 years and made America the world’s leader.

It begins at the local level and sometimes, like in Torrance County, with just a minority of the electorate. In that regard, I encourage all of you to come to the Ward/Precinct and County Central Committee meetings on Saturday, March 8th at the East Torrance Soil & Water building in Estancia. The Ward/Precinct meeting will begin at 11 a.m. We’ll break for lunch (provided by DPTC) at noon and then move to the CCC meeting at 1 p.m.

I encourage any of you to consider accepting a position as Ward or Precinct chair and to consider a position as County Chair or other position.

I will not be able to continue as County Chair after this term and hope that someone will step forward to push the DPTC back into relevance in the community. I will continue to support the DPTC as best I can, both financially and with attendance. Please consider the consequences if we do not continue to push forward.

My goal as Chair was to do everything I could to avoid what we currently face in Washington D.C. I spent two years decrying the consequences of the reelection of a president that I believe is committed to the destruction of our democracy. I, we, failed in that goal, but I, we, can’t quit.

While we were successful in maintaining New Mexico as a blue beacon in a sea of red, we somehow failed as a party to message the majority of our countrymen of the dangers ahead. Now we are living them. As a party and as individuals, we can’t run and hide. Moving to another country is not an option for most of us and frankly, like Volodymyr Zelensky, I’m not willing to give away my country or run from invaders using bullying tactics.  We must resist insanity. We must stand up and fight against attempts to establish an oligarchy in this country. We must push back. It’s now more important than ever.

I hope and trust that if enough of us resist, we can be successful.

STAND UP! PUSH (FIGHT) BACK! BE HEARD!

Police or ICE are at my home!

How to reduce risk to yourself

Stay calm and keep the door closed. Opening the door does not give them permission to come inside, but it is safer to speak to ICE through the door.

Your rights

· You have the right to remain silent, even if officer has a warrant.

· You do not have to let police or immigration agents into your home unless they have certain kinds of warrants.

If police have an arrest warrant, they are legally allowed to enter the home of the person on the warrant if they believe that person is inside. But a warrant of removal/deportation (Form I-205) does not allow officers to enter a home without consent.

What to do when the police or ICE arrive

·   Ask if they are immigration agents and what they are there for.

·   Ask the agent or officer to show you a badge or identification through the window or peephole.

·   Ask if they have a warrant signed by a judge. If they say they do, ask them to slide it under the door or hold it up to a window so you can inspect it.

·   Don’t lie or produce any false documents. Don’t sign anything without speaking with a lawyer first.

·   Do not open your door unless ICE shows you a judicial search or arrest warrant naming a person in your residence and/or areas to be searched at your address. If they don’t produce a warrant, keep the door closed. State: “I do not consent to your entry.”

·   If agents force their way in, do not resist. If you wish to exercise your rights, state: “I do not consent to your entry or to your search of these premises. I am exercising my right to remain silent. I wish to speak with a lawyer as soon as possible.”

·   If you are on probation with a search condition, law enforcement is allowed to enter your home.
